“Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 (NLT)
“Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 (NASB)
”But He gives a greater grace. Therefore, it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6 (NASB)
How important is our physical appearance to God? How are we to see ourselves from God’s point of view? How can appearances be deceiving? How important is it to maintain a good appearance to God?
As Christians and Believers in Christ, we are called to be His ambassadors, to be representatives of His love, grace, and truth in every aspect of our lives. This representation extends far beyond our words and actions to how we present ourselves to the world, and this includes our attire.
While clothing styles and fashion trends may vary, the heart of our message remains the same: we are called to honor God in all that we do, including how we dress. This devotional aims to explore the biblical perspective on modesty and representation, encouraging us to reflect Christ in our outward appearance without falling into the trap of judgment or legalism.
Although clothing styles and fashion trends may vary, the heartbeat of Christ’s message remains the same, in that we are called to honor God in all that we do, which includes our choice of attire and how represent Christ in the church building and society.
Let’s explore the biblical perspective on modesty and representation, encouraging us to reflect Christ in our outward appearance without falling into the trap of judgment or legalism. In ways we cannot fully understand, we reflect God’s own beauty. God places some value on appearances; if He did not, we would all look the same. It is not a wrong thing for us to notice and appreciate physical appearance as well.
Believers In Christ Called to Represent Christ
The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 5:20 that “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” As ambassadors, our role is to reflect the character and values of the One we represent. This calling is not limited to our words or actions but encompasses our entire being, including our appearance.
The Heartbeat of The Believer’s Modesty
Biblically appropriateness in the Bible is often discussed in terms of the heart rather than just outward appearance. In 1 Timothy 2:9-10, Paul says, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” This passage highlights that true modesty stems from a heart focused on godliness and good works rather than outward adornment.
How Important is Our Outward Appearance to God?
Walking with God causes us to reflect on His beauty. Our outward beauty reveals what we look like. Inner beauty reveals who we are.
Proverbs 31:30. Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last, but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.
1 Peter 3:3-4. Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should be known for the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.
1 Samuel 16:7b. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person’s thoughts and intentions.
Matthew 7:20. Yes, the way to identify a tree or a person is by the kind of fruit that is produced.
Colossians 3:16. Whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through him to God the Father.
James 1:23. If you just listen and don’t obey, it is like looking at your face in a mirror but doing nothing to improve your appearance.
Reflecting God’s Glory With Our Bodies
The Apostle Paul penned in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 referring to the Believer’s physical body being the temple of the Holy Spirit, saying “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body.” (NASB)
Paul further reminds Believers in Romans 12:1-2 that we are called to honor God with our bodies. He says. “Therefore, I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” (NASB) This honor is reflected in how we choose to dress, ensuring that our attire is respectful and brings glory to God. It is essential to remember that our goal is not to conform to worldly standards but to reflect God’s glory in all we do.
As you walk with Christ, people will watch to see if your faith is genuine. Your actions will reveal what’s in your heart.
As Believers, we are to avoid judgment and legalism! While we hold convictions about modesty and appropriate dress, it is crucial to approach this topic with grace and understanding. Romans 14:13 reminds us, “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.” Our focus should be on encouraging one another in love and avoiding a judgmental attitude that can create division and harm.
We are to be encouragers in the Body of Christ. As we strive to represent Christ well, we must encourage each other to dress in a manner that reflects our faith. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” By supporting each other in love, we can create an environment that honors God and edifies the church.
HEART
CHALLENGE: How can we avoid judging only by appearance? Thank goodness, God judges by faith and character, not appearances. God looks beyond appearance And because only God can see on the inside, only He can accurately judge people. Most people spend hours each week maintaining their outward appearance; they should do even more to develop their inner character. While everyone can see your face, only you and God know what your heart really looks like. Which is the more attractive part of you?
However, as Believers, we are to beware of appearances. Satan and his servants can deceive us by appearing attractive, good, and moral. Some innocent people are often swept up by smooth-talking, Bible-quoting leaders in a cultic environment. Don’t be fooled by external appearances. Our impressions alone are not an accurate indicator of who is or isn’t a true follower of Christ; so, it helps to ask these questions:
- Do their teachings confirm Scripture, Acts 17:11?
- Do the teachers affirm and proclaim that Jesus Christ is God who came into the world as a man to save people from their sins, 1 John 4:1-3?
- Are their lifestyles consistent with biblical morality, Matthew 12:33-37?
A WELL-DRESSED
HEART: Representing Christ through our attire is about reflecting His character and honoring Him in all aspects of our lives. As we navigate the balance between personal conviction and grace, let us remember that our ultimate goal is to glorify God and point others to Him through our example. May our hearts be filled with love and our actions guided by the Holy Spirit as we seek to represent Christ well in everything we do, including how we dress.
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your Word that provides us with clear instructions on how we are to represent You as professed Believers in Christ. Help us not to become complacent in how we represent You. Father God may we be mindful to watch out for anything that draws us away from God, including the too-often extreme emphasis the world places on appearances. Father, help us to always represent You well in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen.
