The Heartbeat of God’s Breath of Life

November 24, 2024

“Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.”    Genesis 2:7 (NASB)

“And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” John 20:22  (NASB)

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NASB)

As a critical care and emergency room nurse for many years, I’ve placed oxygen on thousands of patients struggling to breathe. But nothing prepared me for the moment when I desperately needed oxygen myself, not just for my body, but for my soul. Have you ever felt as though life was squeezing the air out of you, leaving you gasping for relief, physically, emotionally, and spiritually?

Years ago, I found myself sitting in church, surrounded by worship but unable to feel peace. The weight of life was so heavy that I felt as if I were suffocating. It wasn’t just an emotional response – it felt physical. Alarmed, I ended up in the Emergency Room, and after three days in the hospital, every test came back normal. There was no medical explanation for my distress.

It became clear that the suffocation I felt wasn’t caused by a physical issue but by the unrelenting stress of my life. I was working a full-time job while also holding a part-time position, attending Bible college, serving in ministry, and raising two teenagers. The demands and pressures of life had silently taken a toll, leaving me drained and gasping for something more than air.

God is like oxygen, unseen, yet essential to our every moment of life. Like oxygen, we cannot see God, however, we cannot live without Him!

Just as our bodies depend on each breath to live, our souls rely on His presence to flourish. The Word of God in Acts 17:28 tells us, “For in Him we live and move and have our being”. He surrounds us like the air, sustaining us in ways we often take for granted. Without Him, we are like dry bones, but with His Spirit, we are revived, renewed, and filled with life.

I was recently relaxing on the balcony of a cruise ship, on a fresh morning, breathing in deeply feeling the air I could not see and brushing across my face. Though I could not see the air, I could feel it filling my lungs, nourishing every cell. In the same way, God’s Spirit is constantly present, filling us, empowering us, and giving us strength. It was evident how we are totally dependent on Him, as branches depend on the vine and our bodies on the breath of life. As Jesus said, ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing,’ as noted in John 15:5.

Physical, Oxygen plays a vital role in numerous natural processes that sustain life and maintain balance in the physical world. Oxygen is best described as an element. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Oxygen is a gas that exists as diatomic molecules, with each molecule consisting of two oxygen atoms bonded together Here are some key examples of oxygen’s use in the physical sense:

  1. Oxygen is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is essential for life. It is a vital component of the atmosphere and plays a crucial role in respiration, where living organisms use it to produce energy within their cells. is essential to living organisms, being taken up by animals, which convert it to carbon dioxide; plants, in turn, utilize carbon dioxide as a source of carbon and return the oxygen to the atmosphere.
  2. Oxygen is a chemical element essential for most forms of life on earth and plays a critical role in various biological, chemical, and physical processes. It is essential for our bodies’ cellular respiration, a process that occurs in most living organisms, including humans, animals, and plants. This energy powers all bodily functions, from movement to healing. Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the universe and makes up about 21% of Earth’s atmosphere by volume. It is also a major component of water (H₂O) and Earth’s crust.

In God, we find life,  our true Source, our spiritual breath. Without Him, life is empty and fragile, but with Him, our souls are alive, anchored in eternal hope and love.

Spiritual Oxygen ~ God’s Breath of Life.  When life feels suffocating, burdens are pressing in, stress is mounting, and sin creeping in like an invisible toxin, it’s easy to feel spiritually faint. But just as our physical bodies need oxygen to survive, our souls require divine oxygen ~ the power of God’s Spirit, God’s power, the life-giving breath of God to breathe through life’s pressures. Without it, we gasp, are weakened, and we lose our way.

Spiritual Oxygen allows us to breathe through Life’s Pressures! God is the Source of Life and Breath. God’s breath is the very essence of life. Just as oxygen sustains our physical bodies, His Spirit sustains our spiritual lives. Without His “breath,” we are lifeless, spiritually dead, and unable to flourish. Genesis 2:7, says “Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.”

Spiritual Oxygen – The Holy Spirit. After Jesus’ resurrection, He breathed on His disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” John 20:22. This wasn’t just symbolic, it was a vital impartation of spiritual life. The Holy Spirit acts as the spiritual oxygen that empowers us, revives us, and enables us to fulfill God’s purpose. Just as oxygen is invisible yet vital for life, so too is the Holy Spirit. When we’re connected to Him, we find peace in chaos, strength in weakness, and clarity in confusion. But when we neglect this connection, we risk spiritual suffocation. Acts 17:25 says “He Himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” Every breath we take is a gift from God, a reminder of our dependence on Him for both physical and spiritual vitality. He sustains us moment by moment, providing the “spiritual oxygen” we need to live out His purpose.

Spiritual Oxygen Through the Holy Spirit! Just as we inhale oxygen to sustain our bodies, we receive the Holy Spirit to sustain our spiritual lives. The Spirit empowers, refreshes, and revitalizes us, enabling us to live out God’s will in a broken world. John 20:22  “And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” God’s breath brought life to the dry bones. Spiritually, when we feel dry, lifeless, or suffocated by the pressures of life, His Spirit breathes renewal into our hearts and minds Ezekiel 37:5-6

HEART CHALLENGE: Are You Experiencing the  Symptoms of Spiritual Suffocation? The Suffocation of Sin and the Need for God’s Breath of Life! Just as physical suffocation deprives us of oxygen, sin and life’s burdens suffocate us spiritually. When we lose touch with God, our spiritual life begins to fade. Returning to God through repentance and prayer allows His life-giving Spirit to refresh and restore us. Job 33:4 says, “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”  Let’s do an Assessment!

Assessment: Are you feeling spiritually faint or weary? These might be signs that you’ve been gasping for air in your own strength instead of breathing in the life God offers. Spiritual suffocation can manifest in a variety of ways Here are some:

Anxiety and restlessness

Unforgiveness, jealousy, and  covetousness

Lack of peace or clarity

Holding on to grudges, guilt, or shame

Fatigue from carrying burdens God never intended for you to carry

Not understanding who you are in Christ

God’s Prescription and Plan of Care:

Return to God our only Source of life. Spend time with Him, the Creator of the Universe. Breathe deeply of His Spirit.

REMEMBER: If You Need Oxygen for Your Soul, You Need God’s Answer to Life’s Suffocation! Are you breathing deeply of God’s presence, or are you gasping for air in your own strength? What burdens do you need to exhale so you can inhale God’s peace and grace and live on God’s Oxygen?  Create space in your life to breathe in the Holy Spirit daily. Let God’s breath revive your soul and bring new life to your weary heart. Allow your time with God to influence every aspect of your life, allowing you to be more compassionate, patient, and grounded.

So How Do You Inhale God’s Spiritual Oxygen?
It begins with intentional time in His presence, a rhythm of inhaling His Spirit and exhaling your burdens. Here’s how to inhale God’s Presence “When life feels suffocating, are you inhaling God’s Spirit through time with Him, or are you gasping for air in your own strength?”Here’s how:

  1. Prayer: Prayer is your lifeline to God. In prayer, you exhale worry, fear, and sin, and inhale His peace and guidance. Philippians 4:6 tells us To “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
  2. Scripture: The Word of God is your spiritual air filter, purifying your thoughts and renewing your minds. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.”
  3. Worship: Worship creates an atmosphere where God’s presence is visible. It’s a moment to exhale your focus on yourself and inhale the glory of God. Psalm 150:6 says,  “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”
  4. Silence and Stillness: Life’s noise often drowns out the whisper of God’s Spirit. Silence allows you to breathe deeply of His presence. Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God.”

God’s Maintenance Plan For Breathing in His Presence

Daily Communion with God: Spending time in prayer and Scripture is like inhaling spiritual oxygen. Without these disciplines, we risk “spiritual hypoxia-(lack of sufficient oxygen,” where we become faint, weak, and unable to function as God intended. Psalm 46:10 reminds us to  “Be still and know that I am God.” Sitting quietly in His presence allows you to breathe deeply of His Spirit, finding rest and renewal.

Worship as a Breath of Life: When you worship, you exhale your worries, fears, and burdens while inhaling God’s peace, grace, and strength. Worship aligns your heart with Him, filling you with the spiritual oxygen necessary to face life’s challenges.

A LIVING HEART: When life suffocates, allow God’s Spirit to give you life – God’s breath, His Spirit, is your spiritual oxygen. Without it, you are lifeless, unable to grow or thrive. But when you draw near to Him, through prayer, worship, and the Word, you inhale the fullness of His life and exhale the suffocation of sin, stress, and the world. Remember every breath you take is a reminder of your dependence on God. When life feels overwhelming, when the weight of the world suffocates you, remember: God is your oxygen! Inhale His Spirit through prayer, worship, and the Word, and exhale the burdens, sins, and worries that weigh you down.

God is the only source of life. Into whatever God breathes, there is life and vibrancy.

Intimacy with God involves God’s breathing life into His people.

PRAYER:  Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that helps us to be clear on how every breath we take is a reminder of our dependence on God. Help us to realize when life feels overwhelming when the weight of the world suffocates us, remember God is your oxygen. Help us to inhale Your Spirit through prayer, worship, and the Word, and exhale the burdens, sins, and worries that weigh us down, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen.
