“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;
persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NRSV)

“Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own, but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us then who are mature be of the same mind; and if you think differently about anything, this too God will reveal to you. Only let us hold fast to what we have attained.” Philippians 3:13-16 (NRSV)
How resilient have you been in your commitment and service to God? How resilient are you in being able to endure for the cause of Christ and grow from the experience? How adaptable are you in the craziness of life’s circumstances and the life-shifting changes and bounce back not being bitter but better?
Nevertheless, for the Believer in Christ, being resilient must be the biblical model for Believers in Christ. As children of an Omnipotent God, we are equipped with what we need to stand firm to overcome and NEVER give in or give up on ourselves or the mission and assignment we have been called to being resilient.
By definition Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity! There are abundant examples of individuals throughout the Word of God facing trials and challenges and, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity.
Yes, we live in a fallen world, and there is evil all around. We are not to be overcome by evil; we are to overcome evil by doing good. As Believers in Christ, we are to walk through this evil world not fighting with its satanic system! Attempting to fight this satanic system or adopt its same worldly tactics of hate and revenge – you will lose. The Word of God says we are to “Overcome evil with good.” God has given us as Believers “this good,” which is the Holy Spirit. We are to walk in the Spirit. The Apostle Paul says in Galatians 5:16 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.” He goes on to say, in verse 25, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
The Word of God gives us many admonishments to be resilient and press on despite our issues, circumstances, or failures. We are also admonished to press on amid hardships and temptations. Romans 12:21 tells us “Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.”
(NASB). James 1:12-14 says “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.” (NASB)
The key to resiliency is faith in God and His power! As Believers in Jesus Christ, we are upheld by God’s power and are inherently resilient because of our new nature in Christ. I love what the Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:7-12 “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So, death works in us, but life in you.” (NASB)
The Word of God provides instructions that emphasize the importance of resilience in facing life’s difficulties. Through faith, perseverance, prayer, and reliance on God’s strength and promises, individuals can cultivate resilience and emerge stronger from adversity.
Biblical Insights on Resilience:
Endurance in Trials: James 1:2-4 encourages believers to consider it pure joy when they face trials because the testing of their faith produces perseverance. This perseverance leads to maturity and completeness. The passage highlights the idea that challenges can ultimately strengthen individuals and build resilience.
Strength in Weakness: In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, the apostle Paul writes about finding strength in weakness. He acknowledges his own weaknesses and hardships but recognizes that God’s grace is sufficient, and His power is made perfect in weakness. This demonstrates resilience through reliance on God’s strength in times of difficulty.
Faith in God’s Promises: Hebrews 10:23 encourages believers to hold unswervingly to the hope they profess, for God who promised is faithful. Resilience is demonstrated through unwavering faith in God’s promises, even in the midst of challenges and uncertainties.
Persistence in Prayer: Philippians 4:6-7 urges believers to present their requests to God with thanksgiving and promises that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. This underscores the importance of perseverance in prayer as a source of resilience and peace in difficult times.
Knowledge from Obstacles: Proverbs 24:16 states that though the righteous may fall seven times, they rise again. This proverb emphasizes the importance of resilience in overcoming setbacks. Even when faced with failure or adversity, the righteous are characterized by their ability to persevere and rise again.
Hopefulness in God’s Providence: Romans 8:28 assures believers that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, and who have been called according to his purpose. This verse instills hope and resilience by reminding believers of God’s sovereignty and His ability to bring about good even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
Support from Community: Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to consider how to spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, but encouraging one another. Resilience can be strengthened through the support and encouragement of fellow believers within the community of faith.
HEART
CHALLENGE: The principle of resilience for Christians is founded and rooted in the promise which says, “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” Philippians 1:6b. The heartbeat of resilience, according to the Word of God, is not only enduring situations of the difficulties and craziness of life but overcoming them with obedience, hope, and joy.
A STEADFAST
HEART: Resilience reveals sincere Believers in Christ and the genuineness of their faith. To believe in Jesus and stand “firm to the end” you will need to remain steadfast and not lose heart or give up. If God has called you to a task, be determined to complete it, even if you face opposition or discouragement. The rewards of work well done will be worth the effort. Your faith will be tested. The hard places of life and severe trials will sift true Believers!
We are not saved by being steadfast in our faith, but our courage and hope do reveal that our faith is real. Our abiding to the end does not earn our salvation but reveals us as already saved. Everyone will hate you because of your allegiance to Me. But those who endure to the end will be saved.
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your Word that provides us with clear instructions on how to live resilient lives, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen.
