The Heartbeat of A Living Legacy

August 15, 2021

“A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children; the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.”

Proverbs 13:22 (ASV)

A LEGACY / Heritage is something that is handed down from the past. It may be property, a reputation, traditions, or a position in life.  The Bible has a lot to say about heritage and the fact that children of God are given a Spiritual Heritage.

As mothers and fathers, we can remember when our little bundle of joy entered the world. I don’t know about my cousin Nurse Shirley but as a Nurse, I had the unfortunate yet blessed experience of actually delivering a baby because the Doctor did not make it on time, which is another story it was truly a miracle of life right before my eyes! Because children are a heritage, they should be welcomed with gratitude. We should treasure the children God entrusts to us as our heritage.

Consequently, our ancestral connection travels far beyond just Physiological Attributes.  As a family, we could see a glimpse of this when my brother Michael researched and compiled our family ancestral tree. Yet, what is most important above all is that a SPIRITUAL LEGACY is passed which has more far-reaching implications in the lives of our children and their descendants, a principle which is noted in Deuteronomy 5:9-10.

The concept of Legacy and Family is extremely important in the Bible, both in a physical sense and in a theological sense. It was God’s incomparable idea from the very beginning, noted in Genesis 1:28.

There is no greater institution, no better group of people to effect positive change in the world than the FAMILY. There is no better place to learn the Indispensable Principles of life than the FAMILY. And nowhere can the Truths of God’s Word be more effectively taught and modeled than in the FAMILY. On the other hand, there is no institution, no group of people with more Power and Ability to Destroy a Person than the FAMILY!

God’s commands apply to both Parents and Children. If our faith in Christ is real, it will usually prove itself at home, in our relationships with those who know us best.

Children and parents have a responsibility to each other. Children should honor their parents even if the parents are demanding and unfair.

Parents should gently care for their children, even if the children are disobedient and unpleasant. Ideally, of course, Christian Parents and Christian Children will relate to each other with thoughtfulness and love. This will happen if both parents and children put the others’ interests above their own that is if they submit to one another.

How do we keep the Legacy going and passing on a Living Spiritual Legacy to the Next Generation?

  1.      The family is a central place to relay the Truth.  It is important not to allow a gap to occur because of you!
  2.     Take your responsibility as a parent or parent figure seriously.  THE NEXT GENERATION IS DEPENDENT ON YOU!

RX: A SPIRITUAL HEART    Deuteronomy 5:9-10. “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.” (NIV)

FATHER GOD:   Thank You for the Institution of the Family. Help us to leave a heritage that is spiritual and eternal. Help us to remember Romans 8:17 which tells us that all those who trust in Christ alone for salvation are made joint-heirs with You and our heritage as Believers is eternal life with heavenly rewards, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen!
