“A Changed Heart”

December 29, 2024

“Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23 (GW)

”Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

“The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9 (NASB)

It was through studying and marveling at the functionality of the physical human heart that I developed a deeper understanding of the coordination and interconnectedness of the spiritual and emotional heart. Over the years, God has used the intricate design and functionalities of the physical heart to teach me some transformative lessons about life and the heartbeat of His very nature.

Working in cardiac intensive care for over 20 years, I observed millions of normal and abnormal heartbeats, each reflecting the physical heart’s condition. The heart beats over 100,000 times a day, 35 million times a year, and approximately 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime – an astounding achievement. A healthy physical heart pumps over nine pints of blood per minute, 1,500 gallons each day, and over a lifetime, an astonishing 1 million barrels of blood. Blood travels through 60,000 miles of blood vessels in the body, enough to wrap around the world twice. Truly amazing – no wonder the heart is regarded as the fuel for life.

Only an infinite Creator could design such a unique and effective organ, essential to sustaining our physical lives. Just as the physical heart is vital to the body, our spiritual heart is central to our spiritual and emotional wholeness. The spiritual heart influences every word, action, and thought. King Solomon, the writer of Proverbs, reminds us in Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Another translation states: “Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it.” The heart is truly the most important thing to watch over, for “the issues of life” spring from it. Also, be mindful that the book of Proverbs was written before any of the textbooks of anatomy and physiology I studied in college!

After witnessing the effects of many physical hearts over the years, it was a vivid reminder  of what happens to us as the heart and the cardiovascular system become damaged  and cannot function as God designed it to function and it is reflected in the entire body. The heart is central to life, both physically and spiritually. Just as the physical heart pumps blood to sustain the body, what is most important is what happens  when our spiritual hearts become hardened, broken, or consumed by the wrong influences? It is our spiritual heart that influences every action, word, and thought.

Let’s face it: the HEART is a big deal, for out of it flow the issues of life. In my book, Every Beat of My Heart, I wrote, “Who you are and everything you do flows from the condition of your heart.” When the heart is spiritually healthy, it lays the foundation for a life of wholeness – spiritually, psychologically (emotionally & mentally), and physically, as it reflects the fullness of God’s design. Through years of providing physical and emotional care to patients and studying God’s Word, I gained a deeper understanding of the interconnection of the mind, will, and emotions.

In Scripture, the heart is more than a physical organ; it is the core of our thoughts, emotions, will, and spiritual life. The condition of our heart shapes our identity and actions, influencing our spiritual, emotional, and physical wellness. One profound truth God taught me is that He desires to heal us holistically—the way He designed us. Christ’s death and resurrection were not only for our spiritual salvation but for the total healing of our being. We cannot compartmentalize what God designed to be healed holistically!

A heart that is changed is a heart that is transformed, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our hearts, in the biblical sense, represent more than just the physical organ; they are the seat of our emotions, our thoughts, and our spiritual connection to God. Again, Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This speaks to the importance of the heart as the foundation for all we do. When our hearts are changed by God, everything else in our lives begins to shift – our attitudes, actions, relationships, and even our health. God desires to change us  and transform our lives from the inside out, and how this change affects our lives in profound ways.

My Pastor, Dr. Aaron L. Chapman, preached a powerful message today from the book of Job.  He posed the question, “Can God put you on display?” The  question was interesting because earlier this week, as I began to work on this devotional, I reflected on the question what kind of heart is God looking for? This led me to reflect on the evidence and fruit of a heart that has been transformed by the Holy Spirit.

The prophet Jeremiah clearly describes the condition of the heart before transformation in Jeremiah 17:9-10: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? I, the Lord, search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” This passage highlights the heart’s potential for deception and its desperate need for divine examination and surgery at the hands of the Great Physician. Because our actions flow from the inner condition of our hearts, it is vital to seek God’s skilled hand in transforming us.

Let’s Look at God’s Spiritual Examination of the Heart!

 Evidence of a CHANGED HEART

~ A Deep Hunger for God’s Word: A changed heart craves the truth found in Scripture and seeks to know God more intimately.

Evidence: Regular study of the Bible, delight in God’s Word, and applying it to daily life. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” noted in Matthew 5:6.

~ Repentance and Turning Away from Sin: True repentance involves recognizing sin, confessing it, and making an intentional effort to turn away from it.

Evidence: A consistent pattern of turning from sinful habits and striving to live righteously. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

~ Love for Others: A heart changed by God overflows with love for others, including those who are difficult to love.

Evidence: Acts of kindness, forgiveness, compassion, and prioritizing the well-being of others. “By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35

~ Humble and Teachable: A spiritually changed heart is marked by humility, recognizing dependence on God and being open to correction.

Evidence: A teachable spirit, willingness to accept accountability, and a focus on glorifying God rather than self.  James 4:6” God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

~ A Desire to be Obedient to God’s Word.  A transformed heart naturally seeks to please God by obeying His commandments and aligning your life with His will.

Evidence: A pattern of obedience, even when it’s inconvenient or challenging.  John 14:15 says “If you love Me, keep My commands.”

~ Testimony of the Fruit of the Spirit. A changed heart produces the fruit of the Spirit, reflecting God’s character in daily life.

Evidence: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, Galatians 5:22-23.

~ A Changed Perspective on Trials. A changed heart views challenges as opportunities for growth and trusts God’s plan even in suffering.

Evidence: Patience, perseverance, and reliance on God’s promises during difficulties. James 1:2“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.”

~ A Heart of Worship and Gratitude. Worship becomes a lifestyle, not just an activity. A changed heart overflows with gratitude for God’s grace and goodness.

Evidence: Regular expressions of praise, thanksgiving, and devotion to God. 1 Thessalonians 5:18“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

~A Desire to Serve Others. A changed heart reflects Christ’s servant attitude, seeking opportunities to bless and uplift others.

Evidence: Joyful and selfless service in the church, community, or wherever needs arise. Mark 10:45.“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

~ Boldness in Sharing the Gospel.  A transformed heart has a deep desire to share the good news of salvation with others.

Evidence: A growing confidence in evangelism and testimony about God’s work in one’s life. Acts 1:8.But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses.”

~ Consistent Prayer Life. A changed heart communicates regularly with God, desiring fellowship with Him through prayer.

Evidence: Praying with sincerity, persistence, and faith for self and others. 1 Thessalonians 5:17reminds of the importance of Praying without ceasing.”

~ A Passion for Righteous Living. A changed heart desires to live a life that honors God, walking in purity and integrity.

Evidence: Making choices that align with God’s will and rejecting worldly temptations. Romans 12:2“Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

~ A Growing Relationship with God. A changed heart reflects ongoing spiritual growth and an ever-deepening relationship with Christ.

Evidence: More trust in God, greater spiritual maturity, and a stronger reliance on His guidance. James 4:8, says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

A heart that is spiritually healthy, becomes the foundation for a life of wholeness: spiritually, psychologically (emotionally & mentally), and physically reflecting the fullness of God’s design.

HEART CHALLENGE:  I challenge you to take King Solomon’s advice and guard your heart and be intentional about what influences your thoughts, emotions, and desires. Your heart shapes your entire life. If it’s filled with righteousness, love, and truth, your actions will reflect those qualities. On the contrary, an unguarded heart can lead to harmful choices and spiritual decay.

~ Seek God’s Transformation: Allow God to remove anything harmful and replace it with His truth and love.  The Prophet Ezekiel 36:26says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” God’s promise of a new heart illustrates the need for spiritual transformation. A hardened heart resists God, but a renewed heart responds to His love and truth.

~ Cultivate Gratitude and Joy: A joyful heart sustains overall well-being. Proverbs 17:22 says A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones.

~ Surrender Daily: Submit your heart to God’s will through prayer and worship noted in Mark 12:30.

~ Engross in Scripture: Regularly study God’s Word to strengthen and renew your heart  says, Psalms 119:11, reminds us to hid the Word of God in our hearts so not to sin against God.  Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.”

There is an Ongoing Journey  ~ the Process of Being Renewed is reflected in Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” heart change is not a one-time event but a continual process of sanctification.

A CHANGEDHEART:  A heart changed by God is a heart that overflows with His love, peace, and grace. This transformation does not just happen once, but it is a continual process of renewal. May we all allow God to change our hearts daily, trusting that as He shapes us, we will become more aligned with His purpose for our lives.

PRAYER:  Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that  gives us clear instructions on how we can have a changed heart being healed from the inside out.  Thank You for Your promise to transform our hearts and renew our spirits. Help us to surrender all of ourselves to Your healing power so we will not live fragmented lives. Father, we come before You today, acknowledging the areas of our lives that need Your healing power. Create in us a clean heart and help us to walk in the fullness of the new life You offer. Let our lives reflect Your love, grace, and truth so that others may see Your transforming power in us. Father, make us holy in every way, and may our whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again .We trust You to complete the good work You have begun in us. in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen.
