“Sweet Memories, Sweeter Grace”

July 26, 2026

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” Psalms 34:8 (NKJV)

Did you know that July is recognized as National Ice Cream Month in the United States, and National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month? Each year, people in America consume more than 23 gallons of ice cream on average, and the number is higher during summer. Ice cream, especially, is the coolest and yummiest treat you can enjoy at any time of day.

When I think about ice cream, I immediately think of my father who pastored faithfully for more than sixty years. His favorite flavor was Butter Pecan. Just the thought of it brings back sweet memories of how much he enjoyed sitting down with a bowl of his favorite ice cream.  In his later years, however, because of health challenges, he could no longer enjoy that simple pleasure. Yet I often think that if someone had asked him near the end of his life, “Would you rather have one more bowl of Butter Pecan ice cream or sixty years of faithfully serving Christ in pastoral ministry?” I have little doubt what his answer would have been.

It made me realize something! Some of life’s sweetest pleasures eventually have limits.  Our health changes, our bodies change, and our circumstances change, but there is one sweetness that never fades: the goodness of God. You see, ice cream melts, memories fade, our bodies age, and appetites change.  However,

God’s love never melts, His grace and mercy never expire, and His faithfulness never changes.

I am also reminded of an important spiritual truth. Life is not always like enjoying a delicious bowl of Butter Pecan ice cream. There are seasons of disappointment, aging, unanswered prayers, unexpected losses, and circumstances we would never have chosen. Sometimes life simply is not “Butter Pecan.

Yet even when life changes, God’s goodness never does. While earthly pleasures may fade and our circumstances may change, we can always rest in the sweetness of God’s grace. We can reflect on His faithfulness, embrace His peace, and discover that true contentment is found not in what we have or what we have lost, but in the unchanging goodness of the One who walks with us through every season.

As I remember my father’s favorite ice cream, I thank God for the legacy he left behind, not a favorite dessert, but a life faithfully lived for Jesus Christ. That is a sweetness that never melts.

Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”

The Psalmist David wasn’t inviting us to sample a dessert; he was inviting us to experience the goodness of God personally. The sweetness of God’s presence, His grace, mercy, and His faithfulness satisfy the soul in a way nothing else can.

Yes, ice cream is sweet, but it melts. Memories are precious, but time moves on. Legacies endure because they are lived out in the hearts of others

My father’s favorite flavor was Butter Pecan. His favorite message, however, was Jesus Christ. More than sixty years of ministry have long outlasted every scoop of ice cream he ever enjoyed. That reminds me to ask myself: When people remember me, will they remember my preferences ~ or my faith?   How about you? What will they remember about you ~ your preferences or your faith?

HEART CHECK

Take a moment to reflect and ask yourself:

  • Have I allowed disappointment over what I no longer have to overshadow gratitude for what God has already given me?
  • Am I finding my joy in temporary pleasures or in the unchanging goodness of God?
  • Is there a “Butter Pecan” in my life, a dream, a season, or a circumstance, that I have been reluctant to release to the Lord?
  • What legacy am I leaving behind? Will people remember my possessions and preferences, or will they remember my faith and my love for Christ?

 HEART CHALLENGE

This week, spend time thanking God for the sweet memories He has given you, but do not remain there. Ask Him to help you recognize the sweetness of His grace in your life today.

If you are walking through a difficult season where life doesn’t feel like “Butter Pecan,” remember that God’s goodness has not changed. His grace is still sufficient. His mercy is still new every morning. His faithfulness is still great.

Choose gratitude over grumbling, contentment over comparison, and trust over disappointment. Taste and see for yourself that the Lord is good.

Earthly pleasures are temporary, but God’s goodness and the sweetness of His grace are everlasting!

LET’S PRAY: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that gives us clear instructions on how we can enjoy the sweetness of Your mercy and grace. Father, thank You for the sweet memories You have given us and for the people who have shaped our lives and pointed us toward You. Thank You for every blessing, every lesson, and every season through which You have faithfully walked beside us. Father, forgive us when we become so focused on what has changed that we fail to see the sweetness of Your grace that surrounds us each day. Help us to find our deepest joy not in temporary pleasures or changing circumstances, but in Your unchanging love, Your unfailing faithfulness, and Your everlasting presence. Teach us to embrace each season with grateful hearts, to trust You when life is not what we expected, and to leave behind a legacy that reflects Christ more than ourselves. May others see in us the sweetness of Your love, the fragrance of Your grace, and the hope that only You can give. Help us each day to “taste and see that the Lord is good,” knowing that Your goodness never melts, never fades, and never fails, in the  Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

“Life may not always be Butter Pecan, but God’s grace is always sweeter.”
