“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7

“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
While attempting to delete the many duplicate photos on my iPhone, I came across pictures from my 2007 mission trip to Senegal, West Africa. I was one of the representatives of the Royal Ambassadors for Christ, invited by a young African friend, Mamadou, to share Christ’s message. Along with sharing the gospel, we brought various supplies and clothing. Prior to leaving, we connected with another ministry, which led to meaningful and lasting ministry relationships.
As I scrolled through the images, I was struck by how these old photos were more than just pictures, they were windows into the past, preserving memories, emotions, and history. They captured moments that time could never erase, allowing me to relive significant events, reconnect with people, and revisit the places that had deeply impacted me. Among the images, I rediscovered my photos of the Baobab Tree, a tree I had completely fallen in love with. I had taken numerous pictures of its various sizes and fascinating shapes. The Baobab Tree is a special thing to see
Upon returning home from the trip, I had put together a photo album and was inspired to research the history of the Baobab Tree. Now, revisiting its incredible history, I am once again amazed by its significance. The Baobab Tree can live for over a thousand years, with some specimens estimated to be around 2,100 years old. For centuries, it has been an essential part of African communities, providing shelter, food, and water in arid landscapes. Its massive trunk stores water, allowing it to produce nutrient-rich fruit even in the driest seasons, making it a vital resource for both humans and wildlife.
The Baobab Tree is a majestic, iconic African tree known for its massive, swollen trunk that stores water, allowing it to thrive in dry savannas, and is often called the “Tree of Life” due to its ability to provide sustenance to animals and humans in arid environments. It’s history traces back millions of years, and it has played a significant role in African culture and folklore for centuries, with its bark, fruit, and leaves being utilized for food, medicine, and crafting materials.
Reviewing the history and the character of the Baobab Tree, I was amazed at the striking comparison for the Christian life. The Baobab Tree’s deep roots and expansive branches can be seen as a symbol for spiritual grounding and reaching towards the God our Father. Its ability to thrive in harsh conditions reflects themes of perseverance and faith.
In various traditions, the baobab is viewed as a symbol of life and fertility, embodying the interconnectedness of all living things.
Immediately, I saw what God was doing! I needed to be reminded that in these turbulent times in which we are living, as Believers, we must be rooted and anchored in HIM! Being Rooted in Christ is not just a theological construct, it is a transformational reality that defines us as Believers in the Risen Christ our security, stability, and spiritual nourishment. Just as a tree’s roots anchor it in the soil, drawing essential nutrients for growth and resilience, being deeply rooted in Christ allows us to draw from His strength, wisdom, and unshakable foundation.
The Power of Being Rooted in Christ
Rooted for Spiritual Stability. A tree with deep roots can withstand storms, droughts, and harsh conditions. Similarly, when we are deeply rooted in Christ, life’s trials will not easily shake us. The deeper our relationship with Him, the stronger our foundation in faith, allowing us to remain steadfast regardless of life’s challenges. Colossians 2:6-7 states, “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow Him. Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
Rooted for Spiritual Nourishment and Growth. Being rooted in Christ means abiding in Him, drawing spiritual sustenance from His Word, His Spirit, and His presence. Just as a tree’s roots pull in water and nutrients to support its branches, believers must be constantly nourished through prayer, the Word of God, and fellowship with Him. Without this deep connection, spiritual dryness and weakness set in. John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.”
Rooted for Identity and Purpose. Being rooted in Christ gives us a firm identity in Him. We are not tossed about by the opinions of the world, our past failures, or temporary setbacks. Instead, we are anchored in God’s truth, knowing that our worth and purpose are found in Him. When we remain in His love, we understand that we are chosen, loved, and empowered to fulfill His calling. Ephesians 3:17-19 says, “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.”
Rooted for Fruitfulness. A tree that is well-rooted and nourished produces good fruit. Likewise, when we are deeply connected to Christ, our lives bear fruit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control noted in Galatians 5:22-23. This fruit not only benefits our own lives but also impacts others, as we become vessels of God’s love and truth in the world. Psalm 1:2-3 describes the righteous person as, “he is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”
Rooted for Eternal Security. To be rooted in Christ is to live a life of security, stability, nourishment, purpose, and fruitfulness. It requires intentional growth through faith, obedience, and an abiding relationship with Him. When we remain deeply connected to Christ, we thrive, regardless of life’s circumstances, and reflect His glory to the world. Are you deeply rooted in Christ today? If not, what steps can you take to strengthen your foundation in Him? When we are rooted in Christ, we are not easily uprooted by deception, fear, or shifting cultural trends. Jesus is the firm foundation in 1 Corinthians 3:11. “For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” He is the solid rock on which we stand. No storm of life, persecution, or hardship can separate us from His love Romans 8:38-39.
Charles Spurgeon a renown theologian stated, “If we are rooted in Christ, we grow up in Him; if we live upon Him, we shall live for Him.”
HEART CHALLENGE: In life, we all face seasons of spiritual drought, times when challenges seem overwhelming, and God may feel distant. However, just as the Baobab Tree has an internal reservoir of water to sustain it, we must draw from our internal reservoir of faith, prayer, and God’s Word. Like the Baobab Tree which adapts and continues to thrive, we are called to stand firm in faith, trusting that God is shaping us through trials for a greater purpose. James 1:2-4, reminds us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” When life’s storms rage, we can trust in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
Rooted in Peace, Not Fear. When storms arise, fear can easily take over. But an anchored soul rests in the peace of Christ. Jesus does not promise a life without storms, but He promises peace in the midst of them. Being anchored in Him allows us to remain calm and trust His sovereignty, knowing that He is in control. John 16:33 says, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
Rooted in Faith, Not Doubt. This journey of life will challenge our faith, but when we are anchored in Christ, we trust His promises even when we do not understand His plan. Faith is believing that He is working even in the unseen, and when doubts arise, we return to His Word to reinforce our trust in Him. James 1:6 warns us, “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
A ROOTED
HEART: In the times in which we are living, we must have a heart rooted in Christ. Symbolically, Like the Baobab Tree!
It stands firm in adversity, reminding us to trust in God’s strength.
It offers shelter and shade, illustrating the role of the church in supporting one another.
It provides nourishment, just as God’s Word and a deep relationship with Christ sustain us. If we root ourselves deeply in God, we too can be like the Baobab Tree, being resilient, a source of refuge, and full of spiritual nourishment for others. Jeremiah 17:7-8, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.”
Christ is Our Unshakable Anchor. Hebrews 6:19, declares, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.” An anchor is a critical part of a ship, it keeps the vessel steady in turbulent waters. When Christ is our anchor, He holds us firm through life’s uncertainties. Our hope in Him is not fragile or dependent on circumstances but is steadfast, rooted in His unchanging character and promises.
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that reminds us that we have an unshakable anchor in You. We are living in times like never before. Help us to go back review the past, and remember how You brought us through! May our lives be a reflection of Your grace and peace, bringing glory to Your name, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen.
