“Purpose in the Pain ~ When Hurt Was Not in Vain”

July 27, 2025

”All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

“It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.” Psalm 119:71 (NLT)

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 (ESV)

“He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.”    Psalms 107:20 (ESV)

Have you ever wondered why God allowed hurt in the very place where you gave your heart and served so faithfully? Maybe your question was phrased like this: ‘God, why did the very place where I gave so much of myself become the place that hurt me the most?’ I have shared that experience.

For years, I poured myself into ministry, leading, loving, and serving,  believing it was a place of healing and safety. But one day, that sacred space became the very ground where my heart was wounded. I didn’t understand it at first. The pain was deep, and the confusion was real. But over time, I realized something powerful: God had allowed the pain, not to destroy me, but to develop me into a vessel of hope and healing for others.

My pain became a classroom where the Holy Spirit taught me greater compassion, forgiveness, surrender, understanding, and healing. God used that season of brokenness to reshape my heart and prepare me for something greater, to walk with others through their valleys of pain. Today, I can now say, I am grateful!

This isn’t merely a story of pain or woundedness. It’s a testimony of God’s redemptive power, how He turns affliction into purpose, and wounds into a witness. That revelation didn’t come immediately. It came through a process of grieving, releasing, healing, and being restored by the hand of the One who sees, knows, and heals all wounds.

When we give Him our broken pieces, He brings beauty from ashes, not only for our good, but ultimately for His glory. This is the purpose of the pain, when hurt was not in vain. I’m living proof that God doesn’t waste pain; He transforms it into a ministry of healing. This wasn’t just a painful detour in my spiritual journey; it was a divine setup for healing, growth, and transformation leading to wholeness.

Yes! God never wastes our pain! What crushed me temporarily was ultimately used to cultivate greater compassion and empathy, deepen my faith, and equip me to walk with others through their valleys of pain to wholeness. In His sovereignty, God allowed me to walk through the fire, not to burn me, but to purify me and prepare me to help others walk the path of healing – it is a process!

Healing was one of Jesus’ three aspects of ministry. Teaching shows Jesus’ concern for understanding, preaching shows his concern for commitment, and healing shows his concern for wholeness. His healing miracles authenticated His teaching and preaching, proving that he truly was from God.

How Does God Heal?

God’s healing comes in many forms, each one reminding us that He is always working, even in ways we don’t expect.
• God Heals Through Physicians and Medicine – 2 Kings 20:7
• God Heals Through Miracles – Psalm 119:93, Mark 3:5, Luke 5:12-13
• God Heals Through the Faith of Friends – Mark 2:1-5
• God Heals Through Prayer – Psalm 6:2, James 5:13-16
• God Heals Through Discipline – Isaiah 38:16, Genesis 27:41; 33:4
God Heals Through Time – Isaiah 53:5

By death, Christ brought us life. Through woundedness, He brought us healing. By accepting our punishment, He set us free.

YOUR HEART CHALLENGE:  God measures our pain to make us whole! When you give your life to HIM, it is no longer your own. Because He is your Sovereign God, He reserves the right to do whatever He chooses to shape you, mature you, and prepare you for His service. It’s all for your growth, and for His glory.

Because He is God, and because He is in control, no pain can touch you until it has first gone through God the Father, passed through Jesus Christ, and then reached you. If it has come that far, it has come with a great purpose. You may not understand it now, but trust that it carries divine intent. So don’t panic. Don’t harbor unforgiveness. Don’t become bitter or blame God ~ accept that He allows pain for your refinement and blessing. Yes, it may hurt, but nothing can ever separate you from the love of God.

I am reminded of what the Apostle Paul penned in Romans 8:38-39,  And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow, not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below, indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (NLT)

Through it all, I can say ~  Nothing can ever cause me to doubt the goodness of God!

A HEALEDHEART: A healed heart is a tested and surrendered heart.  One that has been restored by the unadulterated Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. It is a heart that has made a decision not to live in hopelessness or carry a ‘woe is me’ attitude.  Instead, it chooses to view pain through God’s lens: as a teacher, as a refiner, and as a tool for transformation.

The Spirit of God will encourage you to be obedient.  You see, God has already performed “heart surgery  – when you were born again!”  To keep the new heart healthy and strong, He has given you an in-house physician: the Holy Spirit!

Psalm 32:8 declares: “The LORD says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” (NLT)

PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that gives us clear instructions on how we can be healed by Your Word and the power of the Holy Spirit. Father, thank You for trusting us with the kind of pain that only You could heal.  Father, we don’t always understand it at the moment, but we trust that You are using our suffering to shape us, refine us, and prepare us to be vessels of hope and healing.  Lord, take every wound, every tear, and every scar, and use them for Your glory. Help us to walk with compassion and wisdom beside those who are hurting, not just as someone who sympathizes, but as those who understand and give hope that is found only in YOU! Continue Your healing work in our lives, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
