Healing With Purpose: Becoming Whole for God’s Assignment

June 14, 2026

But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus, the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” Acts 20:24 (NLT)

There comes a point in every follower of Christ’s journey when the question is no longer, “Lord, why did this happen to me?” but “Lord, how can You use what happened to me for Your glory?” Many of us, as followers of Christ, have favorite Scriptures, particular verses of Scripture that encourage us, sustain us through difficult seasons of life, and serve as guiding principles for our lives. Over the years, one Scripture has remained especially meaningful to me and has become what I consider my guiding Scripture:

“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus, the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” Acts 20:24, NLT

This verse has challenged, inspired, and anchored me throughout various seasons of my life and ministry. It continually reminds me that life is not ultimately about personal accomplishments, comfort, recognition, or even the avoidance of hardship. Rather, it is about faithfully fulfilling the assignment God has entrusted to each of us.  Acts 20:24 is intensely personal. Paul does not say, “I must finish Peter’s race” or “I must fulfill the work assigned to Barnabas.” He speaks of “the work assigned to him by the Lord Jesus.” Paul understood that God had entrusted him with a unique purpose, and his responsibility was not comparison, but completion.

The Apostle Paul understood that life was measured not by status, possessions, or worldly success, but by faithfulness to God’s calling and purpose. His focus was not on preserving himself but on completing the work Christ had entrusted to him. Unfortunately, many followers of Christ spend more time measuring their lives against others than embracing the path God has designed specifically for them. Many compare gifts, ministries, accomplishments, influence, opportunities, and even seasons of life. In doing so, they can become distracted from the very purpose God has placed before them.

God never called us to be a replica of another person. He created each of us with unique experiences, distinct gifts, and specific Kingdom assignments. The question is not whether our assignment looks like someone else’s, but whether we are faithfully pursuing the work God has entrusted to us. Perhaps one of the greatest evidences of healing is when our pain no longer defines us, and neither does comparison. Instead, we become secure enough in Christ to embrace our own journey, trust God’s plan, and walk confidently in the purpose He has ordained for us. Healing is not merely about recovering from what hurt us; it is about becoming whole enough to fulfill the assignment God has prepared for us.

What strikes me about this verse is that Paul was not speaking from a place of comfort. He was speaking from a place of clarity. He had settled the question of why he was here. When purpose is settled, many other things begin to fall into place.

Acts 20:24 is really a verse about:

Living on purpose

Staying focused on God’s assignment

Valuing God’s will above personal comfort

Proclaiming God’s grace

Finding significance through obedience

Becoming whole enough to carry out God’s purpose

Finishing well

Just as Paul spoke of “the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus,” each believer has an assignment uniquely designed by God. Our experiences, gifts, trials, victories, and even our wounds become part of His preparation process. When we stop comparing and start cooperating with God’s work in our lives, healing takes on new meaning. We begin to understand that God is not simply restoring us from what we have been through; He is preparing us for what He has called us to do.

“God did not create us to compete with one another; He created us to complete the assignment He uniquely designed for each of us.”

Perhaps one of the greatest evidences of healing is when our pain no longer defines us, and neither does comparison. Instead, we become secure enough in Christ to embrace our own journey, trust God’s plan for our lives, and walk confidently in the purpose He has ordained for us. Healing is not merely about recovering from what hurt us; it is about becoming whole enough to fulfill the assignment God has prepared for us.

The measure of our lives will not be how closely we resemble someone else’s journey, but how faithfully we fulfilled the assignment God entrusted to us. When our hearts are healed, our minds are renewed, and our lives are surrendered to Christ, we become vessels prepared for His purpose and His glory. Like Paul, may we be able to say that our greatest desire is to finish the work assigned to us by the Lord Jesus and to share the wonderful grace of God with others.

HEART CHECK

1. Have I identified the assignment God has placed on my life?

2. Am I more focused on my assignment or someone else’s?

3. Have I allowed comparison to distract me from God’s purpose for my life?

4. What experiences, trials, or wounds might God be using to prepare me for His assignment?

5. How can my testimony become a tool for God’s glory?

6. If Christ returned today, could I honestly say I am faithfully pursuing the work He assigned to me?

HEART CHALLENGE: This week, ask God to reveal any area where comparison, insecurity, fear, disappointment, or unresolved pain is hindering your ability to walk in your God-given purpose. Instead of looking around at what God is doing in others, spend time thanking Him for how He uniquely created and called you.

Ask yourself: “What assignment has God placed in my hands today, and am I being faithful to it?” “Now that God is healing and transforming me, what am I going to do with the life He has entrusted to me?”

Ask God: “To heal every area of your life that hinders you from fulfilling His assignment. Ask Him to help you to value His purpose more than your comfort and His calling more than your fears. Let your life be spent advancing His Kingdom and sharing the wonderful grace of God.”

STANDING ORDERS FROM THE MASTER PHYSICIAN! God’s Prescription for Walking in Your Assignment

Healing With Purpose

Directions:

  1. Report daily to the Great Physician through prayer.  1 Peter 3:12, “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” (ESV)
  2. Take a daily dose of God’s Word to renew your mind and strengthen your faith. Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (ESV)
  3. Avoid the toxic side effects of comparison, jealousy, and self-doubt.  Galatians 5:16-17.   But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” (ESV)
  4. Exercise your spiritual gifts regularly through service and obedience. 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.” (ESV)
  5. Refill frequently with God’s grace, mercy, and strength.   Deuteronomy 17:19.  “And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them.” (ESV)
  6. Trust God’s timing when your assignment seems unclear. Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (ESV)
  7. Continue treatment until Christ returns or your earthly assignment is complete. Acts 20:24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” (ESV)

Warning: Do not compare your journey, calling, or progress with others. Doing so may interfere with God’s intended purpose and delay spiritual growth.

Refills: Unlimited through God’s grace.

God did not heal you merely to recover your past; He healed you to fulfill your purpose. Your healing has a Kingdom assignment attached to it!

LET’S PRAY: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that gives us clear instruction regarding our purpose and assignment. Thank You for creating us with purpose and for assigning us a unique work in Your Kingdom. Forgive us for the times we have compared our journey with others or questioned Your plan for our lives. Help us to remember that You have not called us to be a replica of someone else, but faithfully fulfill the assignment You have entrusted to us. Heal every wound, insecurity, fear, disappointment, and distraction that hinders us from walking fully in Your purpose. Renew our minds, strengthen our hearts, and help us to find our identity in You alone. Lord, please give us the clarity that Paul possessed, the confidence to focus on our assignment rather than someone else’s, and the determination to finish the work You have called us to do. May lives reflect Your grace, bring glory to Your name, and point others to Jesus Christ. Help us not merely to recover from life’s challenges, but to become whole enough to fulfill Your purpose. When our journey is complete, may we be able to say that we faithfully pursued the work You assigned to us, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, Amen.
