God's Standing Orders

God’s Standing Orders ~ The Master Physician’s Prescription for Life

May 17, 2026

“ The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8

“Prescribe and teach these things.”  Timothy 4:11

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (NASB)

There were many moments during my nursing career when a physician’s order carried tremendous weight. As a critical care and behavioral health nurse, I learned very quickly that the right order, administered correctly and followed consistently, could help stabilize a patient, promote healing, and sometimes even save a life.

As nurses, we were entrusted with carrying out those orders carefully and accurately because we understood something important: prescriptions only work when they are followed.

Recently, while talking with my daughter-in-love, Dr. Andrea Haynes, a pharmacist, our conversation about medication reminded me of something much deeper. Every prescription is written with a purpose: to treat a condition, relieve symptoms, or bring healing and restoration. Immediately, my thoughts shifted to God’s Word.

Just as physicians write prescriptions for the body, God, the Master Physician, has already written His prescriptions for our lives. His Word provides clear instructions not only for our physical well-being, but also for our emotional, mental, relational, and spiritual healing.

In healthcare, there are also what we call Standing Orders, orders already written, already approved, and ready to be implemented when needed without delay or confusion. They are trusted because they are established beforehand. The same is true spiritually.

God has already written His Standing Orders for every condition of the human heart. His Word still stands, His truth still heals, and His prescriptions still bring life to those willing to follow them. The problem is not that God has failed to prescribe what we need. The problem is that many people know His Word but are not consistently applying His instructions for healing and wholeness.

HEART ASSESSMENT: Ask Yourself! Am I following God’s instructions?  Am I chasing or treating symptoms, or am I following God’s prescription for healing? Am I hearing God’s Word and not applying it? What “Standing Order” have I ignored or delayed implementing?

GOD’S STANDING ORDERS ~ The Master Physician’s Prescription For Life.  God’s Word is the prescription, our obedience is the administration. We must take a daily dose, never skip doses, and apply consistently!

 Standing Orders Summary

Prescriber: God, the Master Physician

Standing Orders for the Heart

  1. God’s Word Is the Prescription for Life

The Bible is not merely information; it is God’s divine treatment plan for healing, restoration, wisdom, and wholeness.

“Prescribe and teach these things.”  1 Timothy 4:11

  1. Unfollowed Prescriptions Do Not Produce Healing

Just as medication must be taken correctly to be effective, God’s Word must be applied consistently to experience transformation.

Healing begins when we stop rewriting the prescription and start trusting the Master Physician.

  1. God’s Standing Orders Are Already Written: God has already addressed the conditions of the human heart:
  • fear ~ trust God’s presence – Isaiah 41:10
  • anxiety ~ pray instead of worry – Philippians 4:6-7
  • bitterness ~ obey God’s Word – Ephesians 4: 4:31-32
  • unforgiveness ~ forgive others – Matthew 6:14
  • hopelessness ~ embrace God’s hope – Hebrews 6:19
  • brokenness ~ receive God’s healing – Psalm 147:3
  • identity struggles / emotional wounds – trust God – Isaiah 55:3
  • confusion ~ trust God’s direction – Proverbs 3:5-6
  1. His Word still stands, and His truth still works. “The word of our God stands forever.”Isaiah 40:8

Obedience Is the Administration of the Prescription

Knowing Scripture without applying it is like filling a prescription but never taking the medication.

God’s Word Becomes Transformational When We Live It Consistently.

God Desires Wholeness for the Entire Person

God’s healing reaches beyond the physical body. He cares about our spirit, soul, and body. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 reminds us that God desires complete wholeness in every area of life.  May the God who gives peace make you holy in every way. May he keep your whole being spirit, soul, and body blameless when our Lord Jesus Christ comes.”

HEART CHALLENGE: This week: Identify one area in your life where you know God has already spoken.  Follow His order(s): not partially, not occasionally, but consistently. The effectiveness of a prescription depended on how it was administered. In our spiritual lives, there is no difference. God has already prescribed for our healing; however, it must be applied correctly for us to experience the results.

Clinically, a prescription only works if it is:

  • Filled
  • Taken correctly
  • Followed consistently

Spiritually, God has already written what we need for our:

  • Emotional and spiritual healing
  • Mental peace
  • Spiritual wholeness

God’s Patients suffer all types of emotional and spiritual conditions, and His Word is our prescription, God’s Prescriptions ~ Standing Orders” works always when it is followed.

God has already written the prescription. The question is not, “Has God spoken?” The question is, “Am I following His orders?”

Remember, God’s Word is the prescription; our obedience is the administration. Healing comes when we trust the Master Physician enough to follow His Standing Orders.

LET’S PRAY: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word, which gives us clear instructions on how to administer Your divine prescriptions.  Thank You, Father, for not leaving us without direction. You have already written what we need for healing, for peace, and for wholeness. Help us not just to hear Your Word, but to follow it consistently. Give us the discipline to apply what You have prescribed, the faith to trust that Your way, which brings healing in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
