HEALING FROM WITHIN: When the News Hits Home ~ Finding Hope When Life Changes in a Moment

November 1, 2026

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Psalm 61:2 (KJV)

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”  Psalm 46:1 (KJV)

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, the focus has been on emphasizing the importance of early detection, recognizing the warning signs, and taking appropriate action. But sometimes life has a way of bringing the very message we have been sharing with others right to our own doorstep.

Recently, a family member came to visit me. What began as an ordinary morning became a conversation I was not expecting. During our visit, I learned that following a routine mammogram and subsequent biopsy, she had received a diagnosis of breast cancer.

What do you do when the news you receive is not the news you expected? How do you respond when your heart is overwhelmed, your thoughts are racing, and you have more questions than answers? Where do you find hope when life changes in a moment?

Although I have spent many years in nursing, caring for individuals and families facing difficult diagnoses, I was immediately reminded that no amount of professional knowledge, preparation, or even spiritual maturity makes us immune to life’s painful surprises or the emotional impact of unexpected news.

Yes, I was shocked. There was disbelief. And because this was someone I love, there was an immediate desire to protect her from the uncertainties that might lie ahead. In moments like these, we want answers. We want reassurance. We want to fix what is wrong, remove the uncertainty, and somehow make everything all right. But what happens when we cannot?

Behind every diagnosis is a person. Behind every medical report is a life. And behind many brave smiles are hearts carrying questions, fears, and uncertainties that others may never see.

What do we do when the circumstances are beyond our ability to control, but the emotions are very much within our hearts?

As I reflected on this experience, my thoughts turned to the words of David in Psalm 61:2: “When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” And I was reminded of something that reaches far beyond a breast cancer diagnosis. Sometimes the greatest challenge is not simply what has happened around us, but how we respond to what is happening within us.

The diagnosis may change our circumstances, but it does not change the God in whom we place our HOPE.

HEART CHECK: Ask yourself, when unexpected circumstances overwhelm my heart, do I allow myself to acknowledge what I am feeling, or do I believe I must always appear strong? Am I willing to bring my unanswered questions, fears, and concerns honestly before God? When unexpected news overwhelms my heart, do I give myself permission to acknowledge what I am feeling and bring those feelings honestly before God?

HEART CHALLENGE: This week, reflect on Psalm 61:2. Identify one concern that is weighing heavily upon your heart and bring it honestly before the Lord. Then consider someone who may be facing difficult circumstances. Offer encouragement, a listening ear, a prayer, or simply your presence. Remember, you do not have to have all the answers to be a source of comfort. This week, consider someone who may be facing difficult circumstances. Rather than offering quick explanations or familiar expressions, ask how you can support them. Sometimes the ministry of presence speaks louder than words.

GOD’S STANDING ORDERS ~ The Master Physician’s Prescription For Your Life.

God’s Word  is the prescription;

Obedience is the administration.

We must take a daily dose, never skip doses, and administer consistently!

Order #1: ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT YOU ARE FEELING. Psalm 62:8 ~ Pour out your heart before God. “O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.”  (NLT)

Order #2: ANCHOR YOUR HEART IN WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT GOD. Psalm 46:1 ~ God is our refuge and strength. “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” (NLT)

Order #3: TAKE THE NEXT STEP WITHOUT DEMANDING ALL THE ANSWERS. Proverbs 3:5-6 ~ Trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in your ways. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.”(NLT)

Order #4: ALLOW OTHERS TO WALK WITH YOU. Galatians 6:2 ~ Bear one another’s burdens. “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” (NLT)

Biblical HOPE is confidence in the character and faithfulness of God, even when the outcome is uncertain.

HEALING FROM WITHIN ~ Healing the Heart • Restoring Hope • Releasing Purpose! Sometimes Healing From Within begins when we stop demanding that our hearts be strong enough for everything we face and allow ourselves to depend upon the God who is strong enough to sustain.

“Sometimes God ministers to the heart before we know what the outcome of the situation will be. His peace is not dependent upon our having all the answers.”

LET’S PRAY: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word!  Thank You for being our refuge and strength, especially when life brings news we never expected. You know the concerns we carry, the questions we cannot answer, and the emotions we sometimes struggle to express. For every person facing a difficult diagnosis, an unexpected loss, or an uncertain tomorrow, Father, we ask for Your comfort, wisdom, and sustaining grace. Give strength to those who are weary, peace to those who are anxious, wisdom to those making difficult decisions, and compassion to those walking alongside them. Help us to trust You, even when we do not understand the journey ahead. And when our hearts are overwhelmed, remind us to look to the Rock that is higher than we are, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
