“Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,
for our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28-29
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” Philippians 3:20-21
Yesterday, our nation paused to celebrate Independence Day. Across neighborhoods and communities, flags waved proudly, families gathered together, and fireworks illuminated the night sky as we expressed gratitude for the freedoms we often cherish but sometimes take for granted.
However, today, the fireworks have faded. The celebrations are over, and many of us return to the routines and responsibilities of everyday life. Yet the questions facing our nation have not disappeared. We continue to live in a world marked by uncertainty, division, conflict, corruption, economic concerns, deception, blatant racial divide, pain of various losses, and an ever-changing landscape that can easily leave our hearts unsettled.
Often watching the headlines, I see division where there should be unity, fear where there should be hope, anger where there should be compassion, and uncertainty where people long for security. While we thank God for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, God’s Word reminds us that the deepest freedom does not come from government; it comes from God. Nations rise and fall, cultures change, economies fluctuate, leaders come and go, but our Savior, Jesus Christ, remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. Our peace has never depended on perfect circumstances; it has always depended on the unchanging character of God.
As Believers in Jesus Christ, questions arise: “How are we called to live in such times?” How do we remain steadfast when everything around us seems to be shifting? Where do we find lasting peace when the future appears uncertain? As grateful as we are for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, I have come to understand that the greatest freedom is not found in the rights protected by a nation, but in the redemption purchased by our Savior.
“A nation may grant civil liberty, but only Christ can give freedom to the soul.”
This Fourth of July weekend, while we celebrate the blessings of living in a free nation, perhaps the more important question is
not, “How free is our country?” but “How free are our hearts?” Yes, governments may protect our liberties, but only Jesus Christ can liberate the human heart. He breaks the chains of sin, heals the wounds of the soul, renews the mind, and anchors us in the unchanging Kingdom of God, a Kingdom that can never be shaken.
As a nurse, I learned that a patient could appear stable on the outside while a serious condition silently develops within. The same is true spiritually. We may enjoy external freedoms and outward success while our hearts remain bound by fear, resentment, pride, anxiety, or unforgiveness. God is not only concerned with the freedoms we celebrate outwardly; He is deeply concerned with the freedom we experience inwardly.
As grateful as I am for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, I have come to understand that the greatest freedom is not found in the rights protected by a nation but in the redemption purchased by our Savior.
Again, the greatest threat to our freedom is not always what is happening around us, but what we allow to happen within us. When fear replaces faith, anger replaces love, or despair replaces hope, the enemy has begun to steal the very freedom Christ died to give us. Guard your heart, remain steadfast, and remember: while the world may be unsettled, the Kingdom of God is not.”
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36. Freedom that no election, economy, or crisis can take away.
The greatest testimony the Body of Christ can offer in uncertain times is not panic, anger, or despair, but steadfast faith. When the world is shaken, God’s people have the opportunity to demonstrate that our hope is anchored in something greater than the headlines. We are citizens of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken, children of a God who never changes, and recipients of a freedom that no earthly power can take away.
This Fourth of July, while we celebrate the blessings of living in a free nation, perhaps the more important question is not, “How free is our country?” but, “How free is our hearts?”
HEART CHECK: The question is not “What do you think about America, instead. The question is:
♥ Is my heart free from fear, or has anxiety become my master?
♥ Is my heart free from bitterness, or am I still carrying yesterday’s wounds?
♥ Is my heart free from unforgiveness, or am I allowing past offenses to imprison my future?
♥ Is my heart free from the approval of people, or do I seek first the approval of God?
♥ Is my heart free to obey Christ, or am I still held captive by old habits and old ways of thinking?
♥ Is my heart anchored in God’s unchanging truth, or tossed about by every headline and every circumstance?
REMEMBER: True freedom is not merely the absence of oppression; it is the presence of Christ ruling our hearts. When the world is filled with division, fear, and uncertainty, God calls His people to stand firm, not in politics, personalities, or public opinion, but in HIM!
HEART 
CHALLENGE: This Independence celebration season, celebrate your nation’s freedom with gratitude, but celebrate your Savior’s freedom with worship. Refuse to allow fear, division, bitterness, or uncertainty to imprison your heart. Stand firm in the liberty Christ purchased for you and let His peace become your testimony in an anxious world.
My hope and prayer are that America can truly become what it claims to be!
STANDING ORDERS FROM THE MASTER PHYSICIAN!
- Examine your heart daily for fear, anger, and misplaced trust. “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” Psalm 139:23 (NIV)
- Pray faithfully for our nation, its leaders, and its people. “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority.” 1 Timothy 2:1–2 (NIV)
- Guard your heart against voices that produce fear more than faith. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
- Speak truth with grace, even when opinions differ. “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6 (NIV)
- Walk daily in the freedom Christ has given you. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
- Keep your eyes fixed on the Kingdom that cannot be shaken. “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful.” Hebrews 12:28 (NIV)
A nation may grant civil liberty, but only Christ can give freedom to the soul. One can be politically free and spiritually bound, or physically imprisoned and spiritually free. The freedom Jesus offers reaches deeper than any constitution; it transforms the heart, renews the mind, and anchors the soul in a Kingdom that can never be shaken.
The world is searching for security in changing circumstances, while God invites us to find stability in His unchanging character.
LET’S PRAY: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that gives us clear instructions for knowing the freedom we have in Jesus Christ. Search our hearts and remove every trace of fear, anger, bitterness, and misplaced trust. Teach us to pray faithfully for our nation, its leaders, and its people. Guard our hearts and minds from voices that create fear and division. Help us speak truth with grace, walk daily in the freedom Christ purchased for us, and remain steadfast in uncertain times. Keep our eyes fixed on You, Father, and our hearts anchored in Your Kingdom, which can never be shaken. Father, God, help us to always remember that the deepest freedom does not come from government; it comes from You, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
