“Walking in His Shoes: Honoring the Fathers Who Helped Shape Our Journey

June 21, 2026

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” Proverbs 1:8

“The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.” Proverbs 20:7

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Happy Father’s Day to all fathers!

As we celebrate Father’s Day, I invite you to pause and reflect: Who is a father or father figure, present or gone, perfect or flawed, whose influence has helped shape the way you walk today?

My father was my pastor for most of my young adult life. Church life and church work were a significant part of my upbringing, not only for me but also for my siblings. Through those experiences, I learned the difference between church work and the work of the Church. The image of my father faithfully serving God’s people is more than a cherished memory; it was a pictorial footprint of discipleship that helped shape me for the journey ahead.

Fathers, and the father figures God places in our lives, whether by blood, marriage, mentorship, or simply faithful presence, leave footprints. Sometimes those footprints are formed through patient instruction. Sometimes they are forged through hard work we never saw but always benefited from. Sometimes they are marked by quiet sacrifice, a steady hand during difficult times, or simply showing up when it would have been easier to walk away.

Long after their voices grow silent, their footprints often remain, guiding our steps and influencing the way we live, love, serve, and believe.

Nowhere is this truth more evident than in the book of Proverbs, where we repeatedly hear the voice of a father instructing his son in the way of wisdom.

Proverbs is full of a father’s voice, urging a son toward wisdom, warning him away from recklessness, and pleading with him to choose the path of life. That voice echoes a deeper truth: God Himself is described throughout Scripture as a Father, one who disciplines in love. Hebrews 12:9-10 reminds us: Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?  For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.”  He runs to meet the wandering child in Luke 15:20: “So he returned home to his father while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”  He gives good gifts to those who ask in Matthew 7:11 declares “So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”

Remember, character is contagious. Children learn far more from what we do than from what we say. A lifestyle of integrity remains one of the most effective teaching tools a parent possesses. While the world often emphasizes leaving financial wealth, Scripture places great value on leaving a good name and a blameless reputation. Such a legacy becomes a quiet inheritance that blesses future generations.

Every earthly father who ever pointed us toward truth, modeled integrity, or simply loved us well was reflecting, however imperfectly, the heart of our Heavenly Father. To walk in someone’s shoes is to honor where they’ve been and to carry forward what they taught us. Today, we remember the men who shaped our steps, and we ask God to help us walk worthy of the path they helped lay.

“Some fathers leave us a name. Others leave us an inheritance. The greatest fathers leave us an example. Long after their voices grow silent, their lives continue speaking through the values, faith, and love they planted in the hearts of those who follow behind them.”

The question is not whether we will leave footprints behind us. The question is whether those footprints will lead others closer to Christ.

Refills: Unlimited

No family can fully measure the vast and priceless treasure that comes from the heart of a praying father. Thank you for being a father whose heart touches the heart of God.

LET’S PRAY: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that gives us clear instructions on how to be a godly father. Thank You for every man You placed in our lives to guide, provide, protect, and point us toward You. Thank You, Father, for the lessons learned in quiet moments and hard ones alike. Thank You, Father, for the fathers who walked faithfully; we give You praise. For the gaps left by fathers who could not or did not, we ask You to be the Father who fills every empty space. Teach us to walk in wisdom, the way a child walks in his father’s shoes clumsily at first, but with a heart set on becoming like the one who led the way. And Lord, make faithful footprints for someone else to follow, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, Amen.
