“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources, he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. ” Ephesians 3:16-17 (NLT)

During the earlier years of my nursing career as night supervisor in an approximately 250-bed private hospital in Lubbock, Texas, I was authorized to approve “Standing Orders” for minor ailments such as headaches, mild fevers, and simple pain. These were pre-approved medical directives that allowed nurses to administer care without waiting for a doctor’s order. This enabled the nursing staff to respond quickly, ensuring patients’ stability and comfort.
In much the same way, our God, the Master Physician, has issued “Standing Orders” for His children: divine prescriptions for daily emotional and spiritual health. These orders are timeless, effective, and essential for sustaining the rhythm of a victorious life in Christ. They are not optional; they are life-sustaining. Ignoring them results in spiritual fatigue, emotional imbalance, and heart illnesses, but following them brings strength, peace, and vitality.
Just as a nurse monitors vital signs, God calls us to monitor the spiritual condition of our hearts, the control center of our lives. Everything we think, say, and do flows from it.
The first and most vital of these is found in Proverbs 4:23, “Guard your heart.” It is not a suggestion; it’s a ‘Standing Order’ from the Master
Physician, Himself, written on the prescription pad of His Word.
The heart is more than an organ that pumps blood; it is the spiritual command center of life, the divine intersection of body, soul, and spirit, the sacred place where God breathes life into who we truly are. It is the meeting place between heaven and humanity, representing the very core of our being, our thoughts, holding our deepest emotions, our will, which fuels our choices and desires, reflecting our relationship with God.
It’s where our faith lives and where sin often tries to hide. The heart is also where Healing From Within begins, for God’s grace restores what pain has broken! When we allow fear, bitterness, pride, or unforgiveness to settle there, they act like spiritual toxins, infecting the bloodstream of the soul. However, when we guard our hearts and align them with God’s truth, every part of our being, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, comes into harmony with His divine design.
The Heart is the Center of Wholeness – God Designed us to be Whole! “Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NLT)
The Master Physician’s “Standing Orders” For a Healthy Life
Standing Order #1: Guard the Heart
Take a daily dose of Proverbs 4:23.
The heart is the control center of life, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. God instructs us to guard it because everything flows from it. When bitterness, jealousy, or sin enter the heart, they contaminate our words, actions, and relationships.
Application for a Healthy Life: Regularly monitor your heart for toxins that pollute the spirit.
Question: “What have I allowed into my heart that is hindering the flow of God’s peace?”
Standing Order #2: Watch Your Mouth
Administer an IM (intramuscular injection) of Proverbs 4:24 and Ephesians 4:29.
Words are powerful; they can heal or infect. God’s order is clear: avoid careless speech and use your words to build up, not tear down. The mouth often reveals the condition of the heart.
Application For a Healthy Life: Speak life, healing, and encouragement, both to others and to yourself.
Question: “Do my words reflect the condition of a healed heart?”
Standing Order #3: Confess and Renew as Needed (PRN Order)
Take a PRN (As Needed) dose of 1 John 1:9.
When sin creeps in, confession is the cleansing agent that restores spiritual balance. There’s no risk of overdose; God’s mercy is abundant!
Application for a Healthy Life: Don’t delay repentance. The longer sin lingers, the more damage it does to your spiritual health.
Question: “When conviction comes, do you seek cleansing immediately or postpone it?”
Standing Order #4: Stay Connected to the Source
Take a Hs (nightly dose) of Ephesians 3:16-17.
The Spirit of God strengthens us from the inside out. Keeping Christ at home in your heart ensures that nothing else invades that sacred space.
Application For a Healthy Life: Make time daily for prayer, worship, and the Word. Connection with the Source prevents spiritual depletion.
Question: “What habits help me keep Christ at the center of my heart?”
Standing Order #5: Maintain Joy and Praise Therapy
Rejoice always — Administer Philippians 4:4 and Psalm 34:1 ~ B.I.D., (twice daily).
Joy is divine medicine for the weary soul. A heart filled with gratitude builds spiritual immunity against discouragement and despair.
Application for a Healthy Life: Praise God through every circumstance; it keeps your spirit strong and hopeful.
Question: “Am I consistent in administering praise, even when life is painful?”
Standing Order #6: Consult the Great Physician Regularly
Schedule daily spiritual checkups — Psalm 139:23-24.
Ask God to search your heart and reveal what needs healing or correction. Preventive care always costs less than crisis care.
Application For a Healthy Life: Don’t wait for spiritual collapse — invite the Holy Spirit to examine your heart daily.
Question: “When was my last honest heart check with God?”

YOUR DAILY HEART ASSESSMENT: Ask Yourself:
~ What’s entering my heart through my thoughts, conversations, or media?
~ Are my thoughts pure, or am I renewing my thoughts daily through the Word?
~ Do I regularly take spiritual vitals: prayer, Scripture, and self-examination to detect early warning signs?
~ Have I allowed resentment, offense, or comparison to take root in my space?
~ What have I been feeding my mind, truth or turmoil? Am I at peace?
~ Do my thought patterns reflect the peace of Christ or the pressures of the world, and is my faith strong?
~ Guarding my heart is not about isolation; it’s about discernment. I must choose what to let in and what to keep out. The gatekeeper of the heart is wisdom empowered by the Holy Spirit.
YOUR HEART CHALLENGE: Take time today to examine the condition of your heart. Just as a nurse cannot neglect a patient’s vital signs, you cannot neglect your spiritual heart and expect to remain healthy. God’s Standing Orders are your daily prescriptions for spiritual stability. Guard your heart. Monitor your words. Confess quickly. Stay connected. Maintain joy. Consult the Great Physician. Following His divine treatment plan leads to wholeness and victorious living.
Just as a nurse listens for the rhythm and strength of the physical heart, God listens for the rhythm of our spiritual one. Peace flows through every part of our being when it beats in harmony with His Word. But when it becomes irregular or disrupted by fear, unforgiveness, or spiritual neglect, He gently calls us back to His care.
The Master Physician still makes heart calls. His Word is our prescription, His Spirit our monitor, and His grace our medicine. Each day we are invited to submit to His divine assessment, allowing Him to heal, align, and strengthen the inner life that sustains everything we do. Allow the Holy Spirit to reveal any toxins that need to be released and allow the peace of Christ to restore your heartbeat of faith.
A HEALED
HEART: A healed heart is a heart that has been diagnosed, treated, and healed with God’s divine prescriptions! It is a heart that is guarded, grateful, and surrendered? A heart that allows the Holy Spirit to reveal any toxins that need to be released and allows the peace of Christ to restore your heartbeat of faith. The only way to experience a healed heart and mind is to infuse it with the truth of God’s Word, through renewed minds on a regular basis.
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word! Thank You for being our Great Physician, providing us with Your divine prescriptions to treat and heal the issues in our lives. Father, search our hearts and remove anything that doesn’t belong. Cleanse us from hidden motives, fears, or unforgiveness. Strengthen us through Your Spirit to guard our hearts with wisdom and grace. Help us to follow Your Standing Orders with obedience and diligence. May our thoughts be pure, our words be kind, and my heart stay aligned with Yours. Guard our hearts, purify our speech, strengthen our spirits, and renew our minds daily. May our lives reflect the heartbeat of Your love and the rhythm of Your grace. Let the rhythm of my life beat in harmony with Your will, in the precious, powerful, and preeminent name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
