Crushed by Failure ~ Anchored in Grace

October 5, 2025

“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”  2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9. (NASB)

Have you ever carried a regret that seemed to follow you for years? One of those moments where you look back and think, If only I had done it differently?

Failure has a way of leaving us crushed; it lingers in the mind, it weighs heavily on the heart. But I’ve learned that even in those moments, God’s grace speaks louder than our regrets.”

“As a nurse, I have been at the bedside of hundreds of patients as they took their last breath. Many times, I quietly wondered if they were saved. With some, I knew through conversations, they had a relationship with Jesus Christ. But others, I still wonder.

I vividly remember one young man who died a painful death from lupus. I was a young nurse in my mid-twenties, although a growing Christian at that time; I didn’t ask him if he knew Jesus as Savior and Lord. I told myself I was ‘just doing my job,’ but looking back, I felt the weight of that missed opportunity. I wish I had asked that most important question. There was no excuse. That regret has stayed with me for years.

Failure is something we all face. The crushing weight of failure reminds us of our limitations. It can come through mistakes, regrets, or the haunting thought of what we should have done but didn’t. It exposes our weakness, pride, or misplaced confidence in ourselves. It keeps us silent when God wants to use our voice. Sometimes those failures crush us with guilt or shame, whispering lies that we’re disqualified or unworthy, leaving us carrying regret for years. Left unchecked, failure can lead to shame, discouragement, or even paralysis.

Crushed by Failure:  Yet in the crushing weight of our failure, we can find God’s grace. God never intended for failure to define us; he uses it to anchor us in His grace! His Spirit reminded me that He is sovereign, and that He could even use my regret to awaken in me a deeper urgency and boldness to share Christ.”

This is what the Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9: My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ When failure or regret crushes us, His grace carries us. He doesn’t waste even our failures, He uses them to teach us, to humble us, and to anchor us in HIM rather than in ourselves.”

Maybe you’ve had similar regrets, the times you wished you had spoken up, acted as you led by the Holy Spirit, or obeyed differently. Remember, God’s grace doesn’t erase your past, but it redeems it. The Lord can use those moments to sharpen your awareness, deepen your compassion, and embolden you for the next time. Your failures don’t disqualify you; they remind you to rely on His grace, not your perfection. We don’t just keep on failing; we all can avoid failure by learning from the mistakes of our past, trusting God every step of the way!

Praise God for His Gift of Grace! Grace is an essential part of God’s character. Grace is closely related to God’s benevolence, love, and mercy. Grace is undeserved favor. It is mercy when we don’t expect it or deserve it. The Word of God reminds us that God has extended grace to us by offering us salvation and eternal life with HIM, for FREE!   Hallelujah!  We don’t have to do anything to earn it. In fact, we can’t earn it or purchase it. We simply accept it by believing that Jesus, God’s Son, died for our sins so we wouldn’t have to. God’s ultimate act of grace is an example of how we are to extend grace to others. We are to be quick to forgive, hasty in extending kindness, generous in love, even when others don’t deserve it.

Thank God for second chances ~ Soul Winning: “Years later, as a member of a local church, we were introduced to a book, Let’s Go Soul Winning, by Pastor Jack Hyles, for training to prepare us to go out into the community and share Christ. The story he told about his own father passing away without receiving Christ left a lasting impression on me. It reminded me that opportunities to share the gospel are precious and fleeting. That experience gave me more of a passion to share Christ more intentionally, because none of us know how much time we or others may have left.”

So if you feel crushed by failure today, remember, God’s grace has the last word. Your past may hold regrets, but your future holds redemption. His grace is sufficient, and His power is made perfect in your weakness.”

YOUR HEART CHECK: Do you acknowledge your failure honestly, attempt to hide it, or pretend it does not exist? Are you able to fully accept God’s grace fully and realize His grace is greater than your mistakes? Have you anchored your confidence fully in God, not in your ability, but in His sufficiency?

YOUR HEART CHALLENGES: Remember when you are challenged and crushed by a mistake or failure, remember it’s not the end of the story. God’s grace will meet you in the very place you feel the weakest, and His power will anchor you so you can rise again!

A GRACED HEART: A graced heart is a heart that recognizes its failures are not fatal; they can be redeemed.  It is a heart that understands God’s power shines brightest where you are at your weakest. Regret can turn into resolve by being anchored in His Spirit. A heart that has accepted the very failures that crushed you can become the place where His grace anchors you more deeply.

PRAYER:    Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that allows us to know that Your grace is sufficient for us, and Your power is made perfect in our weakness. Father, thank you that our failures do not define us; Your grace does. Help us release the weight of our regrets and rest in the sufficiency of Your grace. Teach us to use our failures as lessons that lead to boldness, deeper faith, and a stronger witness for You. Father God, help us to let every weakness become an opportunity for Your strength to shine in the precious, powerful, and preeminent name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
