There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NASB)
“This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.” Habakkuk 2:3 (NLT)
“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” Psalms 27:14 (NLT)

If you live in Michigan, you already know one thing for sure: road construction is everywhere. This past Wednesday was a perfect example. My day was full, from start to finish, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. appointment downriver, rushing back just in time for my noon Bible Study at New Hope, then grabbing a quick bite, and preparing for a 3:00 p.m. meeting with a client. Afterward, I hurried home again to change and head back out.
That evening, I picked up my dear friend Wilma, who lives off Nine Mile in Oak Park. Of course, her road was under construction with only one lane open,
and her street was closed – unbelievable! After I avoided a sanctified attitude – praise God, together we made our way to Kadesh Baptist Church to support a precious Sister in Christ, Shalyn Fuller, with whom I had once served as her liaison in BC-1, Biblical Counseling. She was preaching her trial sermon, and what a joy it was to witness the awesome message God delivered through her.
No matter where you’re headed, north, south, east, or west, you are bound to run into orange cones, detours, and delays. You think you’ve found a quicker route, only to discover another road is blocked. The traffic slows, frustration rises, and all you want to do is reach your destination. But the crews don’t work on our schedule; they work on theirs.
Isn’t that how life often feels with God’s timing? We map out our journey of life, set our GPS with our goals, and expect smooth driving, but then God allows a delay, a detour, or even a complete stop. Just as those road crews and construction workers are repairing what’s broken and strengthening weak foundations and paving the way for safer and stronger travel in the future, God is working behind the scenes in our lives to build, restore, and prepare us for what’s ahead. God is in charge, and our waiting isn’t wasted – it’s purposeful.
Scripture reminds us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” Ecclesiastes 3:1. That simply means even our waiting has a season. What may feel like a frustrating standstill to us is a divine setup in God’s hands. His Word assures us in Habakkuk 2:3, “This vision is for a future time. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”
How about you, in your human nature, as you struggle with waiting or maybe you have overcome the urge to want quick fixes and immediate answers. God’s timing is never rushed and never late. While we are tempted to grow weary in life’s traffic of delays, His Word encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” Galatians 6:9.
So instead of fuming in the traffic of life’s construction zones, a good response is to anchor our hearts in the Lord. As the psalmist declares, “Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord” Psalm 27:14. His timing may not align with our clocks, but it always aligns with His perfect plan. Waiting in “construction zones” of life requires courage, but God strengthens us as we stay anchored in Him.
God’s acts in His time! Waiting for God to act in the affairs of your life is equally difficult, and if you are honest, there are times when you even get impatient with His timing! The Greeks have two words for time, Kairos (καιρός) and Chronos (χρόνος). We operate on Chronos time, a quantitative referring to chronological or sequential time, expressed as Chronos (clock) time. God operates in Kairos time, a qualitative or an appointed time. He dwells in a different realm – the spirit realm, which is beyond the perception of our physical senses.
We live in a physical world with its four known space-time dimensions of length, width, height/depth, and time. However, God is Spirit and not limited by the physical laws of our world. The Prophet reminds us in Isaiah 57:15, “The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: “I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.” (NLT)
If we are honest, when we question God’s timing, it is often because we are looking for guidance or deliverance from a difficult situation. We can rest assured, however, that our heavenly Father knows exactly where we are in our lives at every moment. He either put us there or is allowing us to be there, all for His own perfect purpose. In fact, God often uses trials to strengthen our patience, allowing our Christian faith to mature and become complete. James says it this way, “For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” James 1:3-4 (NLT)
God’s timing is important. The danger is to doubt or resent God’s timing. The secret to peace with God is to discover, accept, and appreciate His perfect timing. We can be excited that we serve a God who is in complete control of everything and everyone from eternity to eternity. No event in history can affect the timing of God’s eternal plan for our lives, which He designed before the foundation of the world.
From our perspective, God sometimes seems slow to intervene on our behalf. But what might appear slow to us is good timing from God’s perspective. There is a danger in doubting or resenting God’s timing. God’s timing is important, and it is not affected by our impatience. The secret to peace with God is to discover, accept, and appreciate God’s perfect timing!
The one thing that is certain is that in God’s time to act, it is perfect timing! The Psalmist says in Psalm 18:30, “God’s way is perfect, all the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.” (NLT) His timing is not our timing; it is HIS timing, and He is never late because God is Omniscient and knows more than we do. In fact, in our lifetimes, from before our birth until the moment we take our last earthly breath, our Sovereign God is accomplishing His divine purposes.
Another key to understanding God’s timing is trust. In fact, our ability to wait on the Lord is largely related to how much we trust Him. When we trust in God with all of our heart, forgoing reliance on our own, often erroneous understanding of circumstances, He will indeed give us direction, Proverbs 3:5-6. “The LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts Him.” Psalm 32:10.
The LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts Him.” And our patience often reveals the degree of trust we have in God’s timing. We should take great comfort in knowing that, when we wait on the LORD, we receive divine energy and strength: “But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” in Isaiah 40:31. The psalmist reiterates: “Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!” Psalm 27:14.
God’s Timing Is Controlled By His Compassion. God may have seemed slow to these believers as they faced persecution every day and longed to be delivered. But God is not slow; he just is not on our timetable. Psalm 90:4, which says, “For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours.” (NLT) Jesus is waiting so that more sinners will repent and turn to him. We must not sit and wait for Christ to return, but we should live with the realization that time is short and that we have important work to do. Be ready to meet Christ any time, even today; yet plan your course of service as though he may not return for many years.
How do we overcome God’s silence and His timing, because His timing is not affected by our impatience? The Apostle Peter reminds us in Peter 3:8-9 and says, “But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord is not really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed but wants everyone to repent. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. (NLT) It’s easy to become impatient while waiting for God to act, but we must never give up on Him.
The nature of God’s Timing requires that we practice patience, which is a spiritual fruit, and Scripture makes it clear that God is pleased with us when we display this virtue, as noted in Psalm 37:7: “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him.” Another key to understanding God’s timing is trust. Our ability to wait on the Lord is largely related to how much we trust Him. When we trust in God with all of our heart, we can count on Him to give us direction, Proverbs 3:5-6. We must remember that God operates according to His perfect and foreordained eternal schedule, not ours.
The secret to peace with God is to discover, accept, and appreciate God’s perfect timing! His timing is important, and His timing will not be affected by your impatience. The danger is to doubt or resent God’s timing. He is not controlled by TIME – He exists independent of TIME!
God’s relationship with TIME is not like ours. We often make the mistake in thinking that because Jesus loves us, He should be in a hurry to answer our request, but God will answer in His own TIME because He is Sovereign and is not obligated to answer in our time, but in His TIME, and He will be on TIME! Maybe He is waiting for you to seek His face rather than His hand! If God does not answer your request, will you still trust HIM, will you praise HIM, will you continue to love HIM?

YOUR HEART CHECK:
♥ Are you struggling with God because you do not like His timing? He makes time, and He decides how He wants to use it! Think about it, you don’t like how He decides to use what He made! TIME BELONGS TO GOD! He will use time to serve His own purpose! Then there would be no mistake that it was God using time for His own purpose and for His own glory!
♥ When have you struggled to trust God’s timing, and how did that experience shape your faith or patience?
♥ In what areas of your life are you currently tempted to rush ahead instead of waiting on God’s perfect timing?
♥ How does spending time in Scripture and prayer help you grow in your ability to trust God’s timing?
YOUR HEART
CHALLENGES: What area of your life feels like it’s “under construction” right now? Instead of growing impatient in the wait, how can you anchor your heart in God’s timing, trusting that His delay is not denial, but preparation? The Apostle Peter reminds us in Second Peter 3:8-10 and says, “But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord is not really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed but wants everyone to repent. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment.” It’s easy to become impatient while waiting for God to act, but we must never give up on HIM.
A TRUSTING
HEART: A trusting heart that waits on God’s timing. Isaiah 40:31, “But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” (NLT) We should take great comfort in knowing that, when we wait on the LORD, we receive divine favor and strength: The psalmist reiterates in Psalm 27:14, “Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!”
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that helps us to always remember that Your timing is always perfect, even when we cannot see or understand it. Please help us to resist the temptation to take matters into our own hands and mess things up. Just as road construction prepares a smoother and safer way, remind us that the delays and detours in our lives are never wasted, as they are part of Your divine plan. Lord, help us to wait with courage and patience, anchored in Your promises. Strengthen our hearts when we grow weary, and teach us to trust that every delay is working for our good and Your glory. We surrender our plans, our timeline, and our expectations to You. Help us to always remember that Your ways are higher, Your vision is greater, and Your timing is best. We pray this in the precious, powerful, and preeminent name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
