He Has Risen

A Living Hope for the Future

April 20, 2025

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3 (NASB)

“For You are my hope; O Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth.” Psalms 71:5 (NASB)

Has there been a time in your life when hope felt distant? A season of deep pain, maybe from the loss of a loved one, an unfavorable diagnosis, the waiting for healing, or longing for a restored relationship. Possibly you’re in a moment right now, facing uncertainty about the future, desperately needing clarity, strength, or peace.

I remember sitting alone in a quiet, empty house after finding my husband not breathing, wondering if anything would ever feel right again. It was a period marked by loss, darkness, and overwhelming despair. But then, in the stillness, something deeper than my emotions began to stir inside me, a whisper of His promise: ” I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

That whisper became my lifeline. It was hope in a risen Savior that sustained me, not hope rooted in circumstance, but in Christ Himself. This was a renewed, living hope, anchored in the One who conquered death and rose again. The resurrection of Jesus Christ wasn’t just an event, it became my reality.” The Apostle Peter penned in 1 Peter 1:3, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” He is speaking of “a living hope!

The Greek word for “hope” here implies an eager, confident expectation. It is not static or dead, it’s lively. The Contemporary English Version translates it as “a hope that lives on.” Unlike the fleeting, empty hope the world offers, this hope in Christ is energizing, alive, and active in the heart of every Believer in Christ. Because our hope is in a living Savior, we can live each day with great expectation. Just as Peter’s hope was anchored in the resurrection of Jesus, so is ours, steady, unshakable, and full of life.

We as people cannot survive long without a LIVING HOPE! Hope keeps us going through painful experiences and the fear of what the future may hold. In a fallen world where people face unemployment, loss of property, poverty, disease, hunger, injustice, disaster, war, and terrorism, we need a living hope. The Bible reminds us in Ephesians 2:12 that those who don’t have Jesus Christ do not have a living hope. Believers in Christ are blessed with real and substantial hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. By the power of God’s Word and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, this Living Hope quickens our minds and souls. It changes our thoughts, words, and actions. Once dead in our sins, we now live with the hope of our own resurrection.

Biblical theologians often call Peter the Apostle of Hope. In this passage, Peter links our new birth, our salvation, with the idea of “a living hope.” The hope Peter speaks of is not the wishful thinking usually associated with the word hope today. Peter is speaking about a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” Because of His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” affirming that salvation is a gift from God, gift of God’s mercy,  the “new birth that provides our living hope!

Our living hope also enables us to live without despair as we encounter suffering, trials, disappointments, injustice, and cruelty, and the craziness of this present life!  The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians chapter 4, “That is why we never give up.Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So, we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NLT)

YOUR HEART CHALLENGE: Where can you go when things seem hopeless? You can go to the Word of God!  Here are some Biblical Examples of those who found HOPE in God!

  1. In the midst of Hannah’s hopelessness, she prayed to God, knowing that if any hope was to be found, it would be found in Him. 1 Samuel 1:1-28 Hannah’s story of being in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the Lord.
  2. Paul and Silas were on death row for preaching about Jesus, yet in this hopeless situation, they sang praises to God. Why? Because they had an eternal perspective. Acts 16:16-34. He took no chances but put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks. Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God.
  3. No matter how hopeless things seem here on earth, in Christ we have ultimate, eternal hope. People who don’t know Christ have nothing but their own hopelessness to cling to. Proverbs 10:28.The hopes of the godly result in happiness, but the expectations of the wicked are all in vain.” Hope is trusting God to act in his good timing. Psalm 27:14“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous, yes, wait for the Lord.”
  4. When we honor God, our hopes can be richly fulfilled. Haggai 1:9, “You hoped for rich harvests, but they were poor. And when you brought your harvest home, I blew it away. Why? Because my house lies in ruins, says the Lord Almighty, while you are all busy building your own fine houses.” (NLT)
  5. Hope is trusting God to act in his good timing. Hope also means carrying with us an eternal perspective that realizes sin and evil may sometimes thwart our plans here on earth, but never God’s plans in heaven. Psalm 18:4-6 says, “The ropes of death surrounded me; the floods of destruction swept over me. The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death itself stared me in the face. But in my distress, I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears.” (NLT)

A HOPEFUL HEART: God is always working in the background of our lives! There are times we have to walk through stuff in the maze of life, even when we desperately want to get over it quickly. But going through is what will get us to the other side with a greater understanding that God has always been and will always be with us. Grab on to the assurance you need that He will be faithful in your situation, no matter what you’re facing, and because of the resurrection, we have a living hope to walk with us! You can stand on His promises and He cannot lie and He promises NEVER to leave us or forsake us – NO MATTER WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!  Psalm 71:5 reminds us, “For You are my hope; O Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth.” (NASB).  “Who but God controls the future? Who but God has a home for us that is eternal? Who but God forgives our sins? Who but God can give us a life that lasts forever? No wonder He is our hope!”

PRAYER:  Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that gives us clear instructions on how we can have access to this living Hope. Father God, thank You for the living hope we have through Jesus Christ. When darkness surrounds us and despair tries to take root, remind us that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us. Father God, we confess the places where we have allowed hopelessness to linger, and we choose today to anchor our hearts in Your truth. Please breathe new life into the dry, weary places of our souls. Restore our joy. Renew our minds. Let Your resurrection power rise within us, filling us with expectation and strength for the days ahead. Because You live, we can face tomorrow, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
