“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” Psalms 139:13-16 (NLT)

If you are not in the medical profession, you probably are not familiar with the term “Collateral Circulation.” However, before I define collateral circulation, I must reiterate that the human body is God’s masterpiece of divine craftsmanship, a mystery woven with precision and purpose by the hand of God.
From my first class in anatomy and physiology I stand amazed at God’s creative design of the human body. From the intricate design of DNA, which carries the blueprint of our lives, to the seamless coordination of the heart, mind, and soul, every detail reflects His infinite wisdom. The body’s ability to heal itself, adapt to its surroundings, and function in perfect harmony with the spirit and emotions is a testament to God’s intentional design.
Through my many years of experience in medical / behavioral nursing and the correlation of biblical principles, God has graced me with the opportunity to be able to make the connection and see beyond symptoms to the deeper emotional and spiritual roots that can impact health and healing. This perspective allows me to compare and contrast medical conditions with spiritual principles, offering insight into how unresolved issues of the heart, such as unforgiveness, anger ,fear, guilt, shame or chronic stress, can manifest itself physically. My passion is to help others understand that true healing begins from within, aligning with God’s design for wholeness and well-being.”
So, what is Collateral Circulation? It is a fascinating physiological process in which the body creates alternate pathways for blood to flow when the main arteries become blocked or narrowed. It can be viewed as an incredible built-in backup system designed by God that keeps blood flowing where it’s needed throughout our bodies! Essentially, it’s the body’s way of adapting and protecting against reduced blood flow (ischemia), providing a natural safeguard to keep tissues alive and functioning. What a remarkable display of God’s intricate design in our bodies!
A Spiritual Analogy
Collateral Circulation ~ A Divine Blueprint for Wholeness
So, what is Spiritual Collateral Circulation? Just as the body develops new pathways to sustain physical life, God, in His infinite wisdom, provides spiritual collateral circulation. These are divine reroutes that ensure our spiritual vitality even when life’s pathways seem obstructed. These alternate routes of grace, provision, and strength are God’s way of leading us toward wholeness, ensuring that we are never without His sustaining presence, when we encounter blockages in our journey of faith.
Science continues to uncover the complexities of the brain, the immune system, and even the connection between our thoughts/emotions and physical health, yet all of it only affirms what Scripture declares: we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14. Our existence is not a product of chance but of divine purpose, reminding us that every heartbeat, every breath, and every cell is a reflection of God’s glory and an invitation to walk in alignment with His will for our lives and His glory.
Spiritual Applications of Collateral Circulation
- When the Main Path is Blocked, God Provides Another Way!
In life, we often encounter obstacles, disappointments, losses, betrayals, or unforeseen trials that threaten to block our spiritual growth. Yet, just as the body reroutes blood flow, God reroutes our steps to ensure we remain spiritually nourished and grounded.
Biblical Example: The life of Joseph in Genesis chapter 50. Though his path was obstructed by betrayal, slavery, and false accusations, God provided an alternate route that led him to his divine purpose.
Life Application: When doors close or plans fail, trust that God is orchestrating another way forward. His provision is never cut off, it simply finds a new path.
- God Uses Life’s Pressure to Develop Strength
Collateral circulation doesn’t happen instantly; it develops over time in response to pressure and necessity. Likewise, our spiritual endurance is built in seasons of hardship.
Biblical Example: Paul’s thorn in the flesh, 2 Corinthians 12:9. Though he faced a persistent struggle, God’s grace provided the strength he needed to continue his mission.
Life Application: Instead of resenting challenges, recognize them as opportunities for God to strengthen your faith and redirect your journey for His glory.
- The Heart Must Stay Open to God’s Divine Flow
In physical heart circulation, if the collateral vessels do not develop, tissues will die due to lack of oxygen. Likewise, if we resist God’s detours and try to force our own way, we risk spiritual stagnation.
Biblical Example: The Israelites in the wilderness – Instead of trusting God’s provision, they grumbled and resisted, delaying their promised destination. Numbers 14:26-35.
Application: A surrendered heart allows God to redirect and sustain us in ways we never imagined. Stay open to His leading, even when it doesn’t align with your expectations.
- God’s Provision is Always Sufficient: Just as collateral circulation supplies just enough blood to sustain life, God’s grace supplies exactly what we need at the right time.
Biblical Example: Manna in the wilderness in Exodus 16:4. God provided daily sustenance, teaching His people to rely on Him moment by moment.
Life Application: Trust that God’s provision is never late and never lacking. He sustains us, even when we can’t see how.
YOUR HEART
CHALLENGE:
- Identify Your Blockages: What spiritual, emotional, or relational barriers are restricting the flow of God’s presence and purpose in your life such as unforgiveness, fear, doubt, or bitterness?
- Seek God’s Collateral Circulation: How has God provided alternate routes of healing, growth, or unexpected provision in your life? Reflect on times when He made a way despite obstacles.
- Strengthen Your Spiritual Pathways: Just as collateral circulation develops over time, spiritual endurance is built through faith, prayer, and obedience. What steps can you take to strengthen your trust in God’s redirection?
- Be a Vessel of Support: Just as collateral circulation helps sustain life, how can you be a “spiritual vessel” that helps others overcome their own spiritual blockages?
♥ Each day, journal about one way God has redirected you or sustained you in a difficult season.
Pray and ask Him to strengthen your spiritual “collateral circulation” so that you continue to thrive even when life presents blockages.
A GROWING
HEART: God’s ways often transcend our understanding, yet like collateral circulation, His provision is constantly at work, even when unseen. What may seem like a detour or delay is often His divine design for leading us to a place of greater wholeness and fulfillment. When life’s main pathways seem obstructed, trust that He is developing new routes of grace and strength to sustain you. Stay open, stay faithful, and watch as He reroutes your journey toward His purpose.
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your authoritative, inerrant, and inspired Word that gives us clear instructions on how we are to navigate Your alternate routes to healing and wholeness. Help us when life’s main pathways seem obstructed and trust that You are developing new routes of grace and strength to sustain us. Help us to be reminded that God’s ways are beyond our understanding, but like collateral circulation, Your provision is always at work, even in the hidden places of our lives. Help us to stay open, stay faithful, and watch as He reroutes our journey toward His purpose in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen
