“For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked… till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.” Psalm 73:3-5, 17
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”Psalm 34:18
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Years ago, a co-worker who was going through a difficult time walked into my office and without much conversation simply asked the question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” I must admit, I was not ready for the question, as I was deep into completing time-sensitive reports and it was not an appropriate moment for a Bible study. She was aware I was in Bible College and possibly felt I could give her quick an answer that would make her feel better about her current situation. Although I attempted to answer her question, I felt it did not make her feel much better in what she was dealing with.
Have you ever felt as though life was not giving you what you deserved? As if the doors to endless possibilities were firmly shut, and you didn’t have the right key to open them? Or, perhaps you’ve looked at the lives of others, their financial success, thriving careers, or happy families – at least what you could see, and wondered, “Why doesn’t my life look like that? Am I missing out on something God intended for me?” Maybe you’ve even said to yourself, “This isn’t the life I signed up for.”
Life often feels unfair, often confronting us with moments that feel deeply unsettling. I would venture to say there are many who have experienced unfairness, from small disappointments to deep injustices, or witnessing it in the media. Life is full of moments that make us pause and say, “That’s not fair ~ where is the justice?” From small frustrations to life-altering injustices, unfairness can feel overwhelming and even at times shake our faith.
As Believers in Christ, these moments can challenge our trust in God’s justice. While these are valid questions, the Word of God doesn’t promise fairness in this life, but it does promise His faithfulness to us. God’s plan calls us to look beyond our present circumstances and glimpse a future that can only be attained through faith, sacrifice, and a belief in the divine potential He has placed within us.
This reality can challenge our faith and understanding of God’s justice. Nonetheless, God’s inspired Word reminds us that while life in a fallen world may seem unfair, God’s character and eternal plan remain perfectly just and good. God’s Word, the Bible reassures us that while life in this broken world is not always fair, God’s character is steadfast, His plans are perfect, and His grace is more than enough as we navigate these challenges of life. It is the Word of God and the comforting power of the Holy Spirit that offers us lens to see beyond the surface. This world, tainted by sin, was never meant to be fair, nonetheless, God’s love, grace, and justice are unwavering – offering HOPE, perspective, and purpose amid life’s inequities
Let’s see how the Word of God will help us navigate the waters of unfairness and injustice and how we can view them through God’s eternal perspective that changes everything.
We MUST…
♥ Recognize and Acknowledge the Reality of Life’s Unfairness. The reality of Life’s blessings and hardships are distributed in ways we can’t always understand. We must acknowledge the truth but don’t allow it to lead to anger bitterness, or revenge. Instead, allow it to drive us closer to God, who provides peace even when circumstances don’t make sense. Matthew 5:45 reminds us, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
♥ Understand the Fallen and Brokenness of This World. The unfairness of life stems from the fall of humanity and the brokenness in creation. Sin introduced suffering, inequality, and pain, which were not part of God’s original design. The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:22,“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.”
♥ Process Injustice and Unfairness. Reflect on a recent situation where you felt life wasn’t fair. Write down your feelings in a journal or express them in prayer, asking God to help you see His perspective. It’s natural to feel disappointed or hurt when life feels unjust. King David’s prayers in the Psalms show us that it’s okay to express our emotions to God. He invites us to bring our pain and frustration to Him, trusting that He hears and cares. David expressed his heart to God. Psalms 13:1-2 “O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand?”
♥ Respond Appropriately to Life’s Unfairness. As Believers in Christ, we are to respond to unfairness by being agents of justice, mercy, and humility, reflecting God’s heart in a broken world. Micah 6:8, says “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
♥ God’s Sovereign Justice Prevailing In The Midst of Injustice. Asaph in Psalms 73 wrestled with the unfairness of life but found peace when he looked at life through the lens of eternity. God’s justice may not be immediate, but it is certain. Psalms 73:3-5, 17, “For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness. They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong. They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else. Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.”
♥ Trust God’s Greater Plan. Think about a time when God brought good out of a bad situation in your life. Write it down as a reminder of His faithfulness and use it to strengthen your trust in His plan for current challenges. Sometimes life’s unfairness is part of a bigger picture we can’t yet see. Trust that God’s purposes are higher and that He uses even unfair situations to shape us, grow us, and reveal His glory. The story of Joseph reminds us that even when life seems unfair, God is working behind the scenes. Joseph endured betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, yet God used those trials to elevate him to a place of great purpose. The Prophet Isaiah also reminds us in Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
♥ Focus on God’s Grace, Not Life’s Fairness. Do not allow unfairness makes you feel bitter, shift your focus to gratitude for God’s grace. It is inherently “unfair” because we don’t deserve it. We did nothing to deserve salvation, yet God freely gave it to us through Christ. Shifting our focus from fairness to gratitude for God’s grace can transform our perspective. Remember the grace of God noted in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.” Begin a “Grace Journal.” focusing on God’s blessings that you could never earn. Write down one way God has shown you grace whether through a kind word, an unexpected blessing, or a moment of peace.
♥ Be a Light in Unjust Situations. Reflect on what Jesus endured for us! It was the ultimate unfairness on the cross but responded with grace and trust in God’s justice. When we face unfairness, we have an opportunity to reflect Christ’s character by choosing grace over retaliation. Peter wrote in 1 Peter 2:23, “When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.” The next time you face an unfair situation, pause before reacting. Pray for wisdom and respond in a way that points others to God’s love and peace. It works ~ I am a witness!
Help Others Who Are Facing Injustice. Let’s think about it! We may not be able to fix all the unfairness in the world, but we can make a difference in someone’s life. By showing compassion and advocating for those who are overlooked, we reflect God’s heart for justice. Identify someone in your life who is struggling with unfair circumstances. Offer practical help, encouragement, or prayer to remind them they are not alone. James 1:27, says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
