The Heartbeat of Spiritual Formation ~ The Challenge of Change

March 26, 2023

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy. 3:16, 17

Sanctify them by Your truth; Your word is truth” John 17:17.

“When we become Christians, we are given all we need for spiritual maturity. Peter tells us that “God’s divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence” 2 Peter 1:3.

Spiritual Formation was one of my favorite subjects in Bible College. I must clarify that I am referring to True biblical spiritual formation or spiritual transformation, and NOT the spiritual formation movement.    True biblical spiritual formation is aligned with the Word of God, the Bible, and the understanding that we are born as sinners and in need of a Savior. Because we have been corrupted by sin, we cannot please God. True biblical spiritual transformation occurs as we yield ourselves to God so that He may transform us through the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is clear as to how to live a life well pleasing to God, it is by obedience and submission to the Holy Spirit in all things. The Bible does not only call us the redeemed, saved, saints, sheep, soldiers, and servants but teaches us that only through the power of the Spirit we can live up to what these names actually mean.

True Biblical Spiritual Formation/Transformation is the process of developing and growing in one’s faith. It involves a deliberate and intentional effort to deepen one’s relationship with a God and to become more aware of the divine presence and guidance in the life of the Believer in Christ.

How Much do you Love the Word of God?  Have you ever wondered why the Word of God is so important to your very existence? With all of the great books and resources and computer programs, The Bible is the ONLY Source of divine revelation and power that sustains Christians in their daily walk with God.   The Word of God (Holy Bible) is the only source of absolute Truth for you as a Believer and Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ because it contains God’s mind and will for your life.

When we become Christians/Believers in Christ, we are given all we need for Spiritual Maturity. Simply, we are expected to grow spiritually! The Apostle Peter tells us in 2 Peter 1:3 that “God’s divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence.”

The Word of God provides guidance for how to achieve salvation and live a fulfilling life. It is trustworthy to change your life.  2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

This process of True biblical spiritual formation/transformation involves a variety of practices and disciplines, such as prayer, meditation, reading sacred texts, attending Christain services, participating in spiritual retreats, and engaging in acts of service and compassion towards others. The ultimate goal of spiritual formation is to cultivate a deeper sense of connection with God and to live a life that is aligned with one’s spiritual values and beliefs.

Let’s look at The Biblical Evidence of What The Word of God Provides for Every Christian:

  1. Infallible in its totality. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple” ~ Psalms 19:7.
  2. It is inerrant in its parts. “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar” ~ Proverbs 30:5, 6.
  3. It is Complete. “For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book” ~ Revelation  22:18, 19.
  4. It is Authoritative and final. “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven” ~ Psalm 119:89.
  5. It is Totally Sufficient for your needs. “That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” ~ 2 Timothy. 3:16, 17.
  6. It will accomplish what it promises. “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it” ~  Isaiah 55:11.
  7. It provides the Assurance of Your Salvation. “He who is of God hears God’s words” ~ John 8:47; 20:31.
  8. The Bible is the ONLY Source of Truth ~ “Sanctify them by Your truth; Your word is truth” ~ John 17:17.
  9. The Bible is the source of God’s blessing when obeyed. “But He said, ‘More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it’” ~ Luke 11:28.
  10. The Bible is the source of victory. “The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” ~ Ephesians. 6:17.

God has commanded that we are to study the Bible, it is His story to us. Believe me, Bible study is hard work. There are no shortcuts, and it takes time, effort, prayer concentration, and persistence. Most of its great truths don’t lie on the surface; we have to dig for them and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s Truth to us.

A STUDIOUS  HEART 2 Timothy 2:15. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (KJV)

Why is Studying the Word of God So Important?

  • Spiritual Growth: The Word of God is like food for the soul. As we study it, we grow in our understanding of God’s character, His love for us, and His plan for our lives. Through studying the Word, we gain insight into how to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to God and beneficial to ourselves and those around us.
  • Guidance: The Word of God provides guidance and direction for our lives. It shows us the way to live a life that is pleasing to God and helps us make decisions that align with His will.
  • Protection: The Word of God provides protection for us. It equips us with the knowledge and understanding we need to recognize and avoid the snares of the enemy.
  • Renewal of the Mind: Studying the Word of God helps to renew our minds and transform our thinking. As we meditate on God’s Word, we begin to think like Him and see the world from His perspective.
  • Relationship with God: Studying the Word of God is an essential part of building a deeper relationship with Him. Through the Word, we learn more about who He is and what He desires for our lives. As we study the Word, we also develop a greater appreciation for His love and grace towards us.

Dr. Howard Hendricks describes the 3 stages of Bible study:

  1. The ‘castor oil’ stage – we study the Bible because we know it’s good for us, but it’s not too enjoyable.
  2. The ‘cereal’ stage – our Bible study is dry and uninteresting, but we know it’s nourishing.
  3. The ‘peaches and cream’ stage – we are really feasting on the Word of God. Bottom line!! Continuing in the Holy Scriptures is able to make you wise.

FATHER GOD: Thank You for Your Word our most powerful weapon to change and transform our lives. Help us to be not only students of Your Word but doers of Your Word, in the Precious, Powerful, and Preeminent Name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen!
