“Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” John 19:28 (NIV)
Although this is Resurrection Sunday while studying the Seven Last Words of Christ, John 19:28, I did some deeper introspection of the FIFTH WORD Jesus spoke on the Cross during His suffering on the Cross – JUST FOR ME! The record reflects that at this time He had hung on the cross for six hours. What Does the Fifth Word Teach us? It teaches us at least three facts. 1. The First Fact teaches us that when He said “I Am Thirsty” is the Personification of Jesus, His physical humanity on the cross, that He was human on the cross and He experienced pain like you and me. He experienced physical torment, exhaustion, and the crushing spiritual aloneness. It was tangible physical suffering, of which His extreme thirst is the one element most of us can readily identify with from our own personal experience. Jesus was human and yet He was God! STOP! In view of the fact the Crucifixion is one of the cruelest forms of death, take a moment to put yourself on the cross with Jesus and have a mental picture of His suffering! Realize that Jesus hanging on the cross was human like you and I and all of His pain suffering, and emotions we can identify with. 2. The Second Fact recorded is Jesus’ Awareness of Scripture reminds us of Jesus’ extensive knowledge of the Prophetic Scriptures concerning His suffering and death and His willingness to fulfill each of them to the letter. Two of the Scriptures Jesus fulfilled are Isaiah 53:12 and Psalm 69:21-22, fulfilling the prophecies written concerning the Suffering Servant. 3. The Third Fact He was completing the commitment He made with His Father. He remained fully in charge until He uttered His last Word. He remained totally focused on the mission, even with all that pain and suffering. He demonstrated that “He laid down His life” – no one took it from Him. What greater LOVE than this. Let their table become a snare before them, And their well-being a trap. Isaiah 53:12 “Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many And made intercession for the transgressors.”
